Do any of you guys have a Hurst Ram Rod vertical gate shifter? I'm thinking about buying one, but I'm not sure if the reverse lock-out is working properly. Please check yours and see if you can put it in first gear and then use the reverse lever to try to put it in reverse at the same time? With engine off, of course....

Have a Mr. Gasket Vertical-gate, basically same shifter. When in reverse it cannot be put in any other gear. It locks out the regular shifter gate, there is a notch that it slides into when adjusted properly.

My uncle ran one years ago in his daily driver '69 Z/28, think he still has it. That shift from second to third was really neat, but it did take some strong fingers to perform the 3-2 downshift.

I had a friend in HS that finally got his ‘69 RS/SS going. He could do the same thing (first and reverse). I guess he could have bought a used shifter, he used it as his parking brake.

We have one of these Hurst shifters in our 57 Chevy, it has to be in neutral to shift into reverse. Great shifter.

  7. The early shifters used spacers to move the shifter to the left. The second design had a bracket that replaced the spacers. The reverse lever is spring loaded. The handle needs to be held in reverse. If you let go it pops out of reverse. Its a built in safety design. The pic of the trans and shifter is my muncie for my car. 20211024_192652.jpg 20211024_192637.jpg 20211024_192557.jpg 20211024_192617.jpg 20211024_192517.jpg 20211024_192505.jpg

I know this is a old thread but I have to give a huge shout to racer-x. I bought a Hurst Ram Rod shifter last year and when I went to mount it to my Muncie (on the work bench) some things just didn't line up (shift stops) or shifting. After looking online for some info on the shifter it took me to HAMB and a Ram Rod Shifter thread, racer-x posted some old articles (with pictures) on the old shifter and how it works just what I was looking for. I got the shifter straighten out and ready to install. Thanks again to racer-x and HAMB.

Don’t know what you are paying, but G-Force sells new Long V-Gate shifters. I just purchased one for our LSR roadster my grandson is now driving. I like them because he will assemble them for your preference on handle length. It also does not use a finger hole style lift which is hard with gloves. It’s more like a hand trigger. I included the reverse handle in the purchase but he did not install it. SCTA requirement.
You definitely cannot put it in 2 gears at once.

I made all the parts that were missing. Levers - rods handles the whole she-bang. Chromed was a little pricey, but what can you do. Look close and I fabricated a Neutral Safety Switch. I don’t have a safety switch on the Reverse Lock-Out,Yet. I know the bolts are a little too short for the nuts to work properly. Oh, I might get Termite Infestation for putting a little wood filler on the back of the mofo. I think a little carpet can rectify that issue.
