Technical What fiberglass car parts have you made?

I sent a text to Wrenchbender this morning. Maybe we can find out. I would like to see him. I am curious where the car is located now? It would be fun to see it run again. They were just at the point where it was ready to make some big numbers when they stopped.

When I was running the Formula SAE team in college we made our body out of carbon fiber using a vacuum bag method.

Kind of a funny story. We wanted to make a mold out of wood and filled in with A-B foam that would be body filled, smoothed, and covered in mold release. The directions for the A-B foam called to mix a certain amount together to net a certain amount of foam. But we needed 4x that much. So we mixed 4 times as much. Welllllllllll, we didn't know that the reaction to create the foam was an exothermic reaction, but we became aware of it when the damn thing spontaneously combusted and we had to kick what looked like a huge, flaming phallus off of the loading dock.

We tried again later with a different approach that worked much better.

I havent made any car parts but have made some off topic stuff in fiberglass. There is a guy here in Nebraska that is building everything in carbon fiber. It is totally off topic but if you can appriciate home brew fabrication and manufacturing, this dude is nearly a hero. Look up awdcutlass on youtube.. worth your time during the winter

 

Since we seem to have drifted off into carbon fiber, check out my neighbor across the back alley on throttle stop garage on YouTube. He has done great carbon fiber panels on his Volvo. Currently, he just showed his English Wheel build.

 

Just remembered another couple pieces I made forv vthe '36 Pontiac. I fit the speakers, trunk release, emergency brake pedals, etc., to the kick panel area then filled in with styrene board and layered it with 'glas. Got custom kick panels out of it. Photo also shows a couple small AC vent panels.

 

The topic is ‘glass parts so I hope this post doesn’t get bounced, the body is on a funny car chassis, but it is a ‘48 Anglia.
Being a fuel altered we knew the front fenders had to go so we cut them off first and used the grille and front of the hood as part of the mold for a 22” extended front end with panels added to the sides. The rear fender molds started as front fenders from a ‘60’s Peterbilt modified to suit. The front had canards and fire bottles added, that is what the cuts were for.
