Can someone please explain what the difference is in these two cowls? I believe the grey and blue one are both 39 Deluxe. The grey one has a dog leg where the hood meets the fender. The blue one seems to come to a point.
I think I've seen other threads on this that might turn up if you do a search. You're correct about the last two photos being Deluxe models. The '39 Standard model has a completely different cowl as it uses a 3-piece hood with a top and two side panels as well as different front fenders, grille, cowl and running boards. Numerous other differences as well but that should cover the front sheet metal. I have some photos of both in my albums as I have built both a '39 Deluxe coupe and a '39 Standard sedan. EDIT: In looking more closely at the side of the cowl in the first photo, I think it's a Deluxe cowl as well. As I remember, the '39 Standard models had several holes for bumpers where the hood side panel rode against so it's not a '39 Standard cowl. I don't know what the deal is with the little dogleg at the bottom. Seen all kinds of those over the years and never really paid much attention to that? I'll watch this, maybe somebody will come up with an answer and I'll learn something!
I don't know why they look different; the grey one looks like my '40 cowl. Here are some pics of my standard '40 I only had one '39 and it was strictly parts and not complete. I seems like the cowl shape was the same as my 40 except for the windsheild . That was 10 years ago.
I think the dark blue 39 coupe was a standard that somebody put deluxe hood and fenders on. He modified the rear hood corners to fill the gap. And probably had to modify the mounting flange of the fenders where they meet the cowl.
Dang, that thought passed through my head, but I thought, nah. I never heard of that. It looks good in the picture.
Good eye @alchemy. I probably would’ve walked by that 39 and not noticed the hood. But yeah. A deluxe hood and fender made to fit a standard cowl.
