My first car was a 48 Chevy 4 door, with a split manifold and a sweet set of pipes. I had just turned 13 in the 8th grade, and paid $45 for it. We lived in the country, and it was a mile to catch the school bus, on a gravel road. I was under 5 feet tall, and needed a pillow on the seat to see over the dash. I drove my sister and I, many mornings, and parked next to some friends place, and didn't sweat the cops!
I was 16 in Saskatchewan working on my Great Uncles farm for the summer. He had an old rusted '54 F100 derelict on the property he said I could have if I could get it started. I tried everything but, I was dumb. I spotted the OT pickup and flew the farm at the end of my gig like I stole it. I put 1600 miles on it in the first month of ownership. I'd pull into a gas station fill up the oil, check the gas, scrape the grasshoppers off the grill and I'd be off.
Technically, I bought a ‘30 Model A when I was 15, but that never made it on the road. Then I bought a 1970 Olds Cutlass S, 2dr, bucket seats, console, 350 rocket, headers, Cragars, baby blue. Pretty sweet by all accounts.
Technically it was a '37 Ford Coupe, no engine, transmission, trunk lid, glass, wiring or interior. Had it 30 minutes before my mom demanded I take it back to the seller and get my $50 back. He was understanding and turned out to be a big help when I bought the '29 A standard coupe three months later. The A lacked wiring other than to fire the engine, glass, roof, upholstery. Three of the four brakes and the emergency brake lost or broke their clevises on my way home from the seller. I locked up the left rear brake trying to stop in rush-hour traffic. Six months later I had rebuilt the engine, transmission, front end, brakes, completely wired it to pass inspection, put a roof on it, windows in it, thrown an old Indian blanket over the stuffing and springs and painted it Rustoleum green. Wheels got painted whatever color I had on hand at the time of tire replacement. It was my ride from fall 1968 to fall 1969.
Mine was a ‘55 Ford with a 272 two barrel, automatic transmission. Ran sweet! But I had to put a 430 MEL in it! Just had to! Bones
1955 F100. My dad gave me his truck when I was 14 so that gave me two years to work on it before I could get my driver's licensee at 16. He helped me put a 390 and C6 in it. I laid the flames out myself and my dad's friend painted it for me. I sold it to use the money for a 1948 Austin A40 Dorset that I still own.
in 1967. upland CA. my dad would not let me buy the wore out 1930 A sport coupe that was in a backyard a few blocks away. soooo... this fiat became my first car… bought from a friend of my dad. 1959 fiat 600 sedan just like this one. $50. had to rebuild the engine in auto shop. 600 cc. 22 raging horses. pos. it lasted me a half year . my second car was a 64 MG sedan. at least i had a blast with it until the crank broke.
Not H.A.M.B. but it was a pretty cool High School car. 1969 MGB GT, Overdrive, Wires & Leather. $965 in 1977. I changed a bunch of tires for that. Mike
My first car was my 31 pickup, although my first drivable car was a 68 Jeepster Commando convertible. It was a lot of fun, had the top down just about anytime it was sunny out.
Older brother & I bought a ,'56 chev 2-door post 265 2 bbl , three on the tree with OD for the princely sum of $ 225 in '63 ,had those " tear the skin off your ass" J C Whitney seat covers , had to fix both headlight eyebrows ,put brakes on it , older mech. my dad new taught me how to replace the synchro , put a western tire floor shift in it , had a lot of fun with that car ......until I rolled it !
First car was OT….. First “rod” was a ‘53 F 100 pickup with a 400 Pontiac. Things have gotten out of control ever since!
My first car was a family hand me down ‘52 Chevy. My dad’s youngest brother had it first. He painted it, put extra teeth in the grille and Caddy caps on it. Engine and interior stayed pretty much stock. He sold it to one of his brothers who kept it for a while, then he sold it to my dad. When I got my license at 16, my dad gave it to me. That car had magnetic qualities!
A 1931 Model A coupe. Always owned pick ups. Not HAMB friendly stuff. Miss my Ford. Its for sale again. Got in over my head and couldn't get local help.
Purchased a ‘62 Impala SS at 15 years old in 1976. My high school car. Many fond memories. Got rid of it while in college.
1st car was a 37 Ford pickup-took my drivers test in it too.. Nice old truck then in 58 got a 54 Merc-I was stylin then.
'62 Galaxie four-door w/ a measly 223 six and three on the column. Got my license in it, had lots of fun drifting on the gravel roads w/ my right foot glued to the floor. Had to watch out for free-ranging cattle coming around those hair pin curves. Joe
Bought a 1936 Pontiac coupe for $13 and towed it home when I was 14. Got it running, got the exhaust manifold split in auto shop and had the head milled. Sanded the body till if felt my arms would fall off and then primered it with zinc cromate and painted about 20 coats of navy blue lacquer with a bug sprayer (took that many coats because of the runs). Blew up the motor driving it around the block a year before I was old enough for my license.
51 Chevy 3100 Was to be my first. I pissed off the old man by doing to many illegal road trips with it while he was not around. It got sold before I was of legal age. OT Dart ended up being the first legal one.
My first and second car. The coupe was $100.00 and the touring came a few weeks later for $20.00 my dad and little brother standing on the running board. I used my paper route money to buy them I was 15 at the time.
