“Back in the Day” – Wayne Adams captured this image of California’s Elbert “Babe” Stapp sitting behind the wheel of Mike Boyle’s Boyle Special No. 2 at the “Milwaukee Mile” on Sunday afternoon, August 27, 1939. Stapp would win the 100-mile American Automobile Association (AAA) Indy Car race on the dirt mile, taking the checkered flag in front of George Barringer, Lewis Durant, Russ Snowberger and George Robson as more than 30,000 fans watched. Chicago’s Emil Andres was the event’s fastest qualifier with a lap of 40.64 seconds. A field of 17 cars started the race. (Wayne Adams Photo).
35 Miles from home here in little 'ol Mesa for the past 30 years and where I have to go for most of my food supplies. The largest town in W. Co. and between Denver and Salt Lake City. Way too much growth/concrete for my taste and pretty much prefer the old days, however some great history. Not too many changes here close to home with the mountains in my back door, a lot of public land and wide open spaces.
