Where on earth did you get the Waukegan Speedway poster? I went to high school there (1962-66) and saw quite a few races at that track. I think I was too young to ever see races at the other Chicago area tracks.

    Hello,

We know that 1940 Willys pickup trucks numbered into the 30k in 40-41. The woody wagons numbered a lot less with only a few left around, these days. But, what about a custom RPU? The style and function of an RPU is two fold. One, it is an open roadster with fenders. Two, it is a pickup truck with gobs of room in the back for all sorts of “stuff.”

Since it is for street usage only and not for the all out drags, there is no 10% engine set back. So, the seating compartment will be relatively roomy for a couple of teenagers. My brother and I had to install the SBC motor 10% back in our 1940 Willys Coupe , then it created a new problem with the rest of the components. The seats had to be moved back so there was a comfortable seating arrangement. Also, no modifying the steering to fit the driver position.

As the story goes, if the custom 40 Willys RPU was created, it certainly would have been a first. As we expanded our small speed shop, Precision Racing Engines, in our backyard shop area, it would be perfect to carry parts that would not fit in the trunk of the 58 black Impala. If more space was needed, a custom trailer would be necessary.

An SBC motor, McCulloch/Paxton Centrifugal Supercharger, a Stick Hydro transmission, with Positraction rear gears would round out the daily driver driveline. The styling would be smooth small hubcaps on painted rims, plus Moon Discs for helping the trailer be somewhat streamlined. Or, the big bucks, Halibrand Mag Wheels for the RPU + the trailer.

So note: It is not a modified, post 1964 year RPU with a 671 sticking out of the hood with a scoop, but the 671 Hemi is being transported in the custom trailer.

Not a very artsy photo on my part, but the car is quite a piece of art. Unknown owner/builder, Nugget Casino, West Wendover, NV.

That was just part of a photo I saw online and surprised to find there
was a track up there. The one that really caught my attention was
Mance Park Speedway in La Grange, Illinois. That area now is a combo
of forest preserve, residential and industrial. I started hanging in the
La Grange - Countryside area in 1966 and I'm positive there was no track
there at the time. People were going a little further south to Santa Fe
    Speedway:

"There's only one speedway with a track of clay, and
You ain't been nowhere 'till you've been to Santa Fe."

  26. I have got to tell you guys how much it means to me to have the "Friday Art Show" to look forward to. I am sure there are others that feel the same but anyway, THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!
    Later,
    Dick
