Unfortunately all my photos are of the 4X2 setup. It was pretty simple, as I simply used a linkage rod between the carbs, and tied the second one to the throttle bellcrank. The old Olds was happy from idle to 6K rpm. It was a joy to race, and I ran it very hard. It was a workout to handle, as it was very heavy, being built to run all out on long straights. The T-85 3-spd/OD worked magnificently, and for the most part was not in OD on tracks like Laguna Seca and Sears Point. I used the tranny for braking, and would often squall the tires coming into corners. Needless to say, racing the bugger was a huge high !! El Caballo Monterey 001.JPG El Caballo 003.jpg

Quite a few pages back, I posted on the Campbell Special and my connection to it.

I was at a flee mkt, a couple of weeks ago and there was a guy, with a bunch of '60's HR Magazines. I sorted threw them, and picked 7 of them, based on what the covers said. One of them, the Jan '62, I picked, because it had a article on Formula Jr's. Those were the first Formula cars that I was interested and were instrumental in my buying my Formula Atlantic, 11 years later.

WELL, as I was looking threw it, there was this article on the Campbell Special, with detailed pictures. Man, was I surprised!! As I said in my original post, the chassis was first built for the 61 ci, J.A.P. engine and that is pictured, as well as the external U-joints, I spoke of, mounted out side of the wheel flange.

    Hello,

In the early days of sports car racing on the road courses, So Cal residents, Max Balchowsky and Phil Hill had drag racing in their history. The Old Yeller history is in history archives, but to see an old photo of Phil Hill driving his Monza Ferrari makes one think of how much gearheads participate in any form of racing.

It is similar in performance, just because of what it feels like to race, anywhere. Local road courses like Riverside Raceway in So Cal, all the way to the longer famous European road courses. There is maximum acceleration on the straightaways and the feel of running at top speed. Thrilling to say the least, especially in an low slung open cockpit roadster. YRMV

This is my latest car. It's a Sebring II, kit car, made by Classic Roadsters Ltd, a long gone company.

It's well built, although not finished. Good fiber glass work, on it own frame. It will get a 412 ci, Ford FE engine.

It will have to be a drag car, as at 77, I'm to old to do more SCCA stuff.

I added a picture of my 100-6, that I bought in '62, after getting out of HS.

    Here's MY starter project . . .
I've had this '58 MGA for more than twenty years, started resurrecting it last year and honestly, its;s actually coming out OK. just body work so far but I have a new frame, fiberglass front and rear fenders, 289, automatic trans, and narrowed Ford rear end for it. It will end up being something of a gasser-look, probably not H.A.M.B. material, but still fun to play with . . .

Many parts from the El Caballo went into the EC II, even the seats. It even ran at Bonneville with the Olds engine out of the El Caballo.

When it comes down to fun/dollars, I gotta think that my old Crosley/Almquist would win, hands down. This little bugger was fast, loud, and just flat fun.... On the first straight at Laguna Seca there is a reader board that tells speed. That little V8-60 would click off 110 MPH on every lap. Doesn't get better than that. sonomahistoricsbfox035-M.jpg

I can't tell, is that a V-8 60? It was a fairly common swap into these MG's. Mine did have one in it when my friend bought it but he bought it as a rolling body back in 1962.

    Hello,

Well, one research project is nearing completion. Back in our hot rod drag race days, we had friends that lived within blocks of our house to a mile or so away. But they all had easy access to the local Lion’s Dragstrip. It was located on the far Western edges of the Westside of Long Beach and it surrounding neighborhoods. The actual address was in Wilmington, which was the city to the West. But, the entrance was on 223rd street or as we called it on the Westside neighborhood, Wardlow Rd.
    upload_2022-5-4_3-33-28.png 1958
The entrance to Lion’s Dragstrip, taken from the Long Beach City limits which is walking distance to the official entrance driveway and sign.

If one looks at old maps of 1960 of Wardlow Road and 223rd Street, they are one in the same, starting at the city edge of Wilmington. Wardlow Road runs East to the Long Beach Airport and 223rd Street runs West to Old Town Torrance. Our mom used to drive right by the Lion's Dragstrip Entrance on her way to visit friends in the Torrance/Gardena area, as she hated driving on the 405 freeway West.

Our friend lived a few blocks away and we visited many times during the building phase of the hot rod sports car. The body looked like a Devin body, but the frame and driveline was all custom made in his garage.
    upload_2022-5-4_3-37-36.png
Bob Foster was also a partner in the build, along with Gary Weldele the primary builder. By the time they were finished with the hot rod sports car, we had already moved on to our recovery phase from our Willys accident and into our future desert motorcycle adventures. So, no action films from the dragstrip during our days there. I thought the Red Devin sports car I did film was the initial hot rod sports car build.
    upload_2022-5-4_3-39-29.png
But the build and style, as similar as it is, were each different to make them stand out on their own merits.

One can hear the shrieks of horror all the way from the UK... It's hard to explain today when these are north of $200K how they were treated in the 70s, 80s.

I don't think you could do a Hot Rod Sports Car thread o/w foreign bodied cars. They were cheap and plentiful in the '60's & '70's and ran at all drag strips, I know of.
