I always liked this idea whenever I was on a trip but cruise control fixed it.

Have you adapted cruise control to your classics? Wasn't sure if that was something that was pretty easy with a vacuum hose or not...although I'm sure that's another modification the purists would get wet panties over...still, that doesn't matter to me when I'm driving mine...I won't even be thinking about them at that point...:) (and probably shouldn't be thinking about them now...)

I added CC to an OT 73 car in 1980. It had a mount on the turn signal indicator the operated it and a pick-up off magnets mounted on the drive shaft. It had an electric box with what looked like a lamp pull chain mounted to the carb throttle.
It worked fantastic. I probably bought it from Tres Amigos DeLa Pep. It would be great on my 56 now…

I could see adding that if it wasn't too difficult. It would sure be convenient. My kids are the only ones that have working cruise control as they own relatively newer cars. My wife's and 3 of mine don't have CC. Tres Amigos, reminds me how critical California was to the hot rod scene, the Zoot suits paved the way for cruising from the 40s, and in South East L.A. was the hot bed for much of the beatnik beach party hot rodding crowd (i.e., Roth, VD, Barris, Jeffrey's, et al, but Watson was born out of that area as well). Hard to find a decent project car these days though...the Impala became king! It was even one of the rare beasts to get the 327 option on them, arguably one of the best engines of it's day.:)

Googled them and they can. One company seems to be the best. Magnets on the driveshafts and sounds like a cable style throttle is best.
