Yuppers, Wayne said it took him back a bit when he was asked, and the gent said that no he wasn't dying anytime soon if he had anything to do with it but when the time did come, he wanted to be sure that Wayne would help his family with it. No small task to prep and promote what is probably the most iconic custom Merc that still exists as built back then.

If the high prices of these cars continue, there may come a time when a rich guy will no longer be able to afford a hot rod.;)

Well that's good. I'm glad I had the chance to marvel over it when it was displayed at the Petersen - even if now it's tucked away in a private warehouse I still have the memory. :)

  14. Hmm....a lot of stupid comments, questions on here. If you knew Jim McNeil, you knew his love and passion for his car. I'm sure he would be surprised at the price. He always said, maybe a million, if you asked him what he thought it was worth. Then he would smile, cause he was so humble. Almost embarrassed to put a number on it. Anybody who has ever invested 50, 60, 70k into a build, thinking, I'll never get that out of it, might think again. A chopped 51 Mercury didn't bring that price....it was Bob Hirohata, the Barris Shop, Jim McNeils story, the fact that Jim held onto to it all these years, everything. There are many very nice Mercurys out there. None with this history. This is 1 of 1!

  15. When I went to the Merc Gathering, met Jim and he let me sit in the car, I teared up! This was it! I'm holding Babe Ruth's bat, I'm dancing with Ginger Rogers, shacking the hand of a President, shooting Clint Eastwoods gun! Highlite of my life! Nobody around to take my photo. I got lots of pics that weekend.

Well said Bob. I was glad to see it in the Petersen along with other milestone vehicles.

I've never been so pleased to be wrong by so much.

This really is the custom car, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one that feels that way.

I can't find the exact story, but in short Bob owned serval parking lots and someone walked up to him and shot him.

I thought it would get close to one million but not anywhere near where it got to.

Hmmm...withholding information? Not very "HAMB-like". It's not like this was a private, backroom sale. It was public sale in front of perhaps a million viewers. Wouldn't/shouldn't that make any information sort of public domain?

The question was does anyone know who bought it. My answer is yes. The question wasn’t who bought it?. Like you said, it was a public sale in front of perhaps a million viewers. Again, not my story to share.

I don't get the secrecy. It will come out eventually. If you want to be asked politely and properly " Who bought the Hirohata Mercury?" Thank you.

Here's a link to the entire sale process. But ,it only identifies a "telephone bidder"

Yeah, imagine that freedom eh...I wonder if the buyer thought as I did in bidding related to the year of the car...

Man... this is thrilling for his family. Awesome to see.

I still cannot figure why auctioneers speak that way. Hibbity-bibby dual spotlights, bibbity-babbitt-one-two-three-dribbly-bibbity-dibbity-bunbadabbabubbada... hahaha

I think so you are not sure how much you are actually bidding.
