Hey guys I'm building a 30/31 5 window ...I have a shell and frame I'll be asking a lot of questions.....first one is stock steering column? Somthing out of the 40s

  2. I assume you are building a coupe? In which case, they all have 5 windows;)
(A Tudor sedan also has 5 windows.)

    Enjoy the process.

Welcome to the HAMB. Tons of stuff on Model As. I'd look around at a lot pictures and get a little better idea of what style you want to follow. Then, you''ll know better which direction to ask. How traditional do you want to be? Remember that what worked for steering in the first half of the 20th century might not be the best idea in the 21st.

  8. Apparently size matters in a model A. The seat steering column/wheel, seat and possible chop or channel all play into things, and are best addressed in the planning stage. I am six feet and 220 with my Christmas weight and will be building a 31 coupe. Seems like enough room when I sit on my milk crate, but lots of guys are cautioning me that things get tight in a hurry.

All Model A coupes, excepting a very few rare prototypes, were 5 window.

  13. New builders often shop individual pieces and try to build with what they end up with. Bad idea. Build a vision to fit the era and reason bumper to bumper drive train and inside. Then go shopping, you'll ask for less opinions that way. You'll also end up with less junk that don't work. We all do it different, what works for you?

@Joe Blow THAT'S a hell of a collection of threads!

@buickbuilder a common steering box and column would be to use an F1 steering box and either the column that comes with it or a belled column from an earlier year Ford.

I can't remember what year my column was from I think it was 39/40. I remember getting this and the box from a swap meet. I only wanted it for the column because I using an F1 box.

Also, look up @NealinCA 's posts. He's the resident steering box guru.

note the crossbar under brent's dash , i think that is the way to go... support your column from it and not ask the dash and its anchors to take the load...

I am an inch taller and just barely fit in my stock ‘31 coupe.

Unless I missed it, I don't see that he said it was a Ford or a Model A. He said he was building a 30/31 five window. Given his screen name, it just might be a Buick!

A really good point! I’m Fordcentric I guess. Maybe that’s why we haven’t heard from the OP as we rant about A-bones. :)

  23. Well, this is a traditional hot rod site.;)

  26. So we get back to Bandit who pointed out this is the OP's first post in 8 years. 'Soon' may be a very long time. I know it was when my father said it to me when I was a kid.
And so 8 years later he has a mystery coupe.
