Famous iconic custom but that's crazy. I got bored and started looking for another project which is something I wasn't going to do and haven't found anything that I was interested in that was reasonably priced. A lot of the projects out there are priced like a finished car, guess I'm just getting old and tight.

^^funny thing as we get older we remember what things used to cost more and more. I know I do.

I was wondering the same thing. It also went through Kindigit Design to get the interior done. I remember the crew taking it to a 7-11

Well, things don't really cost more...what we call "money" today is just worth less.
Suppose you had a "change jar" back in the 1960s and you saved all your Dimes, Quarters and Half Dollars which at the time, were 90% silver (actually worth something).
Now supposed you saved up $1000 worth of change in the '60s, but forgot about that "change jar" until today...that $1000 of '60s change is now worth $16,631.00...because it was REAL (silver value) money.
$1000 would buy a pretty good car in the '60s.
$16,631 would buy a pretty good car today.

  14. A boatload of money for the most beautiful kustom in the world. You are welcome to disagree.
There ain't a car guy alive who hasn't at least heard the term "Hirohata Merc". I would not have been surprised to see it go even higher if not for a good portion of the wealthy guys that really idolized the car either ageing out of the hobby or having already passed on.

The only negative here is that every kook with a 50's Merc anything rotting to the door handles in their back yard will now figure they're sitting on at least a $100,000 car.

Who bought the car? Was it a corporation looking to hide some money? This Is what bothers me. Or was it a gearhead like us who just happens to have the money and wants to be a caretaker of this iconic custom? I hope the latter. Lippy

The Hirohata Merc is a nice car but somehow it got this label of being the most...beautiful?
That is such a personal choice and yet people start drinking the KoolAid and just like that it becomes a pseudo reality! I’ve seen many, many cars that I would prefer over that Merc. It does have an interesting history but the$e auctions seem to be such an ego driven affair it’s ridiculous! Too much money and too little brains... And don’t tell me it’s iconic, or it has providence, and all the other bullshit. It was built on a Ford assembly line, was sold, had some nice changes made, was refurbished, and sold again. Now any old piece of shit is going to be worth unrealistic magical money and the young guys will be further distanced from getting involved in what we love. They’ll be forced into a “cool 2013 Hyundai” or some other junk...

Can I just have La Jolla, and the 1.9 million and change? I do love that Merc though.

Sorry, but I think someone paid way too much for a car they can’t drive because now it is too valuable. One expensive coffee table.

  30. There was at least a couple of guys selling collections, one was Michael Fuchs, another Gary Runyon. His wife looked plea$ed for some reason.
