CALLING ALL HIPPY GEEZERS FROM THE 60'S

You would have made the adjustment just like the rest of a us draftees...There's something about others having the power to force you in situations that is humbling....and a good lesson to remember..
I would up having good duty assignments and doing some shit that was entertaining....

 

Love Valley rock concert 1970, the lang haired hippy is yours truly and my head band wearing friend is Dennis, he died a few years later from a drug overdose, my vises was hot rods, girls & alcohol I never messed with drugs.

 

I thought I was one of Paul Revere's Raiders. Lol { My Mom and me in 1967 } One of my favorite groups at the time.

 

I dug the Raiders big time. One of the albums (cd now) that I go back to repeatedly
is their debut "Here They Come", a solid record at a time when there was a fair amount
of cheesy rock being released.

About 2006 I found that Mark Lindsay had a Saturday evening radio program in
Portland, Oregon, and he based a lot of the show on requests. Hard as hell to get
thru as everyone wanted to speak to Mark, he took all his own calls. I wised up
and would call before his airtime and had a few great conversations with him.
He'd ask how things were going in Chicago, saying he enjoyed the city and the food,
and we also talked cars with him telling me about his Ferrari 275 GTB. No attitude,
friendly as could be.

 

Wow, I had never seen that book before. I just went on EBay and bought one!
When I was a kid, my mother and I used to walk to the local library a few blocks away. She would pick out a few paintings to hang on the wall at home, and switch it up every month. Anyway I was 5 years old in 1970 and I remember begging her to always get Peter Max paintings to take home. I loved the colors and trippy feel to his art. Doesn’t really go with my current decor, but I figured an airplane book would be a cool conversation piece.

 

That really makes me smile @67drake, that something that was posted on this thread, was informative, and was instrumental in prompting you to find one of these Peter Max books on EBAY and then acquire it!
So cool that something, that you didn't know existed, is now a part of your collection !

Proof positive, that the HAMB, is a great cosmic intersection, where cool geezer gear heads can retrieve a piece of their past, by simply reading a thread about things from the 60s ! That is so cool that you have one of these Peter Max books now!

When I met Peter Max and received the pillow, he said to me, "Make no appointments....be not disappointed." I will always remember that, but may not follow it.

 

Old photo. We ran out of gas in or old hippy van. The guy at the gas station said I had to leave my girlfriend there as a deposit for the gas can. Then he said he was kidding. lol

 

Those were the days. I also lived through them, listened to WHFS, but before that I listened to a show on WCAO in Baltimore that had a show called "Kirby Scott's underground hour" that played psychedelic music late at night. Bands like Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly, Moby Grape, Cream and many others deemed too radical for daytime radio. What I loved most about the music of that period was that the bands sounded so different from each other. There was no mistaking Creedance Clearwater Revival for Santana or Hendrix or any other groups. It was a time of musical variety in rock music that will probably never again happen. I played in bands continually since high school (and still do...) and still play some of that '60s stuff. Here's a pic of me around 70-71 playing with our "jug" band "Back Porch Pickers" at a local bar. I am playing the banjo with a harmonica in a holder...

 

When it comes to great music, these days, I encourage you all to take the time to check out radio station " WWOZ "out of New Orleans. It's truly amazing how good this radio station is!

Through the advent of live streaming through the Internet, this station has it all, great jazz and blues, rock and roll, bluegrass, traditional Appalachian, vintage music from the 20s, 30s, 40s, incredible interspersed snippets of comedy from Firesign theater, Monty Python, gospel , Texas swing, rockabilly, etc, etc !

The cool thing about this station is, they are never boring, they really mix it up, and they are not governed by some corporate conglomerate like " clear channel ". The DJs and radio personalitys are free to choose what they want to play, and they do it with style!

Plus you will hear music played on this station that you won't hear on any other stations, I am truly amazed at the musical diversity, that this great radio station is known for!

They play music that is perfect for hot rod lovers and gear heads that like to dance and drive fast and take chances, or just kick back with an RC cola and a moonpie in a hammock, listening to the katydids buzzin in the trees!

 

Have any of you heard of Radio Garden, it's a free app on your phone. You can listen to any radio station all over the world. There's an image of the globe with little green dots where the stations are. Highlight the dot and you are listening. I can even picked up the college station about 8 miles from me that is so weak I can't get it on a normal radio. No idea how it works but it's great.

 

WHFS was the greatest. Privately owned and did their own thing. No bubble gum or top 40. Damian, Weasel, Cerphe and the rest of the gang were always my number 1 radio preset.

 

Saw them at Knotts Berry Farms Good Time Theater.

 

Just a bump for a fun thread. I been enjoying all your stories. The 60's and 70's were GREAT! A photo of my wife, and our little Subaru van. I put a big windup key on the rear. I planned on a SBC but never got around to it. The peace sign is just a sticker that's on the old photo. It wasn't on the Van.

 

Dude, been listening to OZ for many years. Best Christmas I ever had two years ago in New Orleans, visiting my son. Hit service @ St. Louis Cathedral that morning. Got back Uptown, started cooking seafood and drinking wine on the front porch, blasting OZ over the stereo, visiting w/ folks walking by the house.

1966 thru 1971 were the best of times. I hung with two small and pretty
different regular crews. We didn't go looking for fun or trouble, we made
our own.. Through circumstances some long days started out great and
spun out of control, other days and memories can make me laugh out loud
to myself. The music was kool, the cars were tuff and the girls were pretty.
Beer and wine were the refreshments of choice and, fortunately, drugs didn't
introduce themselves full force. They did catch up with us, though, wreaking
havoc on some. I had chances but decided I preferred to have some sort of
control over myself.

Getting drunk in a car and then strolling into a high school dance like we
owned the place (regularly). Driving to other towns and picking up girls
who were getting out of Sunday evening mass and wanted to cruise. Hitting
the drive-ins and almost getting suckered into street races by guys who were
wiser than we were. The memories are all pretty much still here, it's a
shame there are no photos to go along with them.

February 1967, Chicago. A Friday take a break from school day. Later
that day I picked up the Doors' debut release without having heard a
note of it. Also got beaned in the side of the head by an iceball driving
past a school in Chinatown. Little bastard. But we had to cruise the
streets of Chicago in Kenny's '57 Bel-Air with the windows down.

 

Great flick plus the soundtrack introduced a great song "Rhinestones in the ashes"

Did anyone notice that the stoner in the glasses has a "doobie" for a nose and the dude in the hat has a nut sack for a chin!

My hippy friend Moose said that they could shave his head if they raised a certian amount of money ? for the crippled children league. Well they did, and they did. lol I'll add.
