Hot Rods Let's see some Texas Roadsters

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by KKrod, Jun 12, 2021.

  1. We have the same crazy weather here in Connecticut. Except we have snow and salt to deal with. But it is our choice to drive a roadster. You have some nice ones in Texas for sure . People ain’t bad either

Thanks for all the reply's. Yes we roadster driver's choose it for ourselves. Connecticut and Texas alike. I have been in some really bad rainstorms in my roadster. I don't have a top. I think I may have to get one though. Or else get faster at putting a rain suit on. One experience I won't forget. Some friends were having a great get together but it was about 60 miles away. Beautiful sunny day. I left at about 11:00 and ran into some traffic. My temp gauge started climbing higher than it had before. No problem though when I got out of traffic. As I got closer to the event the roads began getting narrower. About the time I was on a two lane county road a very localized thunderstorm swept in. And I mean the weather changed just like that. The road had bar ditches. It was raining so hard I could just barely see the bar ditches while creeping along at 10 mph. Any faster and I could not see them. I was scared to death that someone would run into me from behind since I was moving so slow and a pair of 1939 Ford taillights don't shine too bright. Thank the Lord, I finally found a place to pull over in someone's driveway outside their closed entry gate. I just sat there getting drenched for what seemed like an hour. A person I didn't even know stopped and told me to get into their truck. It turns out it was a very nice older woman that lived across the street and saw me and came to my aid. We sat in her truck and talked like fast friends for about 30 minutes and when the rain stopped I went on my way. Believe me, she was my good Samaritan. I made it on to the event and was some kind of a spectacle pulling into the driveway being drenched from head to toe. I had a good time anyway and made it back home in the sunshine with no problems. I have more than a few stories just like that. I have stopped at stop lights near my house in heavy rain and just got drenched waiting on the light to turn green. I can't speak for all of Texas but during spring this happens pretty regularly. So now I confine myself to mainly local events and keep closer tabs on the weather. But we choose to drive these roadsters. A hood and a top will be coming my way soon. Good old RainX liquid coating on both sides of the windshield helps. The problem is I wear glasses. When they get drenched I am driving blind almost. Maybe the glasses need the RainX coating too. Those are only a few of the stories of driving my topless roadster some 12k miles mostly in Texas. A rain suit is a good investment. I'll have to get one of those too.

I believe I am the 2nd owner of this roadster from Scotts Valley in Northern California. It has a 302 powertrain. The build was started in the late 50s more done in the 60s and 70s and then I bought it in 2018 and have done a little messaging on the suspension. Henry Steel Deuce from top to bottom.

  4. My Roadster has been to Texas, also LARS, Northwest Deuce Days, Jalopyrama, but it doesn't live in Texas.

I'm right here, just a little slow to pick up on this thread. Thanks for thinking of me, Stillrunners!

I've been running the '32 tub for quite some time and is my daily beater when the weather is decent; I'm just finishing up the red '31...and there's a third one, a '29 on '32 rails, in the works. Always busy!

    phaeton 215.jpg red roadster 72.jpg
The '32 Tub is my daily beater in decent weather, to the grocery store, parts store...wherever. The rear seat area has been turned into organized storage for my cooler, tools, battery and lawn chair, with plenty of room for groceries and parts.

new roadster 520.jpg red roadster 71.jpg red roadster 73.jpg
The red '31 is on '32 rails with a Ford HiPo 302 with three deuces for power with a World Class T5 5-speed, 3.73 posi 8.8 and disc brakes all around. It's not quite finished but it's already been driven quite a few miles...without the doors! It's a runner!

    new roadster 547.jpg
The new car is a Henry steel '29 on '32 rails...but not the rails in this picture. The new frame has been pinched to fit the body and is looooooow! One of my buddies is building a stout L79 327 for it, backed by a World Class T5 and a 3.25 posi 9-inch. The car weighs nothing so it should be an excellent performer without being fussy to drive.

This is a channeled '32 roadster belonging to my late cousin, Buddy Boren, who lived in Dallas (actually Highland Park). I took these in the summer of 1958 after we'd been cruising around town in it all morning. All I remember of the specs was that it had a '40 Ford dash and a pretty hot Isky cam.

Roadsters in Texas are not as common due to people not wanting to be cooked alive.....

We have 2 months of roadster weather in a year, and some nights... My bald head will stick to having a roof. But I salute you roadster guys...
