Workers from the Wheel and Axle Division measure steel wheels destined to be used in the retractable domed roof of the soon to be constructed Pittsburgh Civic Arena. When the Civic Arena opened in 1961, it was the first auditorium in the world with a retractable roof. The dome contains 2,950 tons of Pittsburgh steel including the wheels pictured here.

Interesting... That model Messerschmitt was an American import to the East Coast. The “towel rack” tubular bumpers were installed by the importing dealer. West Coast cars had a different style commonly referred to as “Ram Horn” style. The deluxe model Messerschmitt (two tone paint, unique interior) was only available in 1955 and 1956.

1920 - 1930 picture of the entrance to the ride. The hills in the track that are seen in this picture were soon removed because rain made the wooden track too slippery. That condition is known as "SLIPPY" in Pittsburghese!

A candidate for the overly ambitious architecture award.

That method of retraction would give any engineer fits from wind load, thermal issues, etc.
