Thanks folks. I made a tiny bit more progress this weekend (but you all know how long these 'little' jobs can take)....
Tail lights marked out and fitted:

Made a front spreader bar and started fabricating a headlight bar:

Then I ran out of acetylene so had to give up with the headlight bar, burnt out my cordless drill doing the tail lights with a 3" holesaw, then cut my thumb with the grinder, whilst extending my radiator stay bars......... so I went inside for a beer!
I'm going to be running stock model A headlights, but I want to get them as low as possible. I think where I have the cups set now (over the frame rails) is ok for height, but a bit too narrow and I can go a bit wider. More on that when I have more gas.

I'll probably get shot for asking this but... what are the taillights from? they are everywhere but no one states what they are from... it's probably very obvious!

What is causing that weird effect in front of the radiator?

 

That's a zebra insert

 

It’s a fine stainless steel square pattern mesh. Must be some effect of the light and my crap phone camera. It’s not as weird as it looks!

So, it’s time for the controversial headlight position! I thought I knew all along where I wanted the lights to sit. I put them quite low and tight to the radiator shell.

Maybe it’s the fact they are so large, maybe I have them too low……
I’m not quite sure I’ve got it right. What do you guys think??? (By the way, I realise they are pointing a little skyward in these shots)





I cut up a model A headlight bar and put a slight bend in it. The stands are just tacked and clamped at the moment, so maybe I will just leave it as it is and stare at it for a few days. Normally, though if something looks right, it does so right away.

 

It might be the cross bar that's throwing you off.

And yeah, those lights are big.

 

Yes, it may be the bar that looks odd. I’m going to try raising the lights an inch and maybe a touch wider if I can get away with it.

The lights are 9” ‘28/29 model A I believe.

 

Lots of faffing about this evening and I think I’m happy with it now. I ended up raising them so that the top of the lamp was half way up the radiator shell. I also moved them back a smidge. (Looking at the pics it’s hard to see much difference).

I kind of wanted to keep the big model A lights as I like the period look and the big flat lenses. My other option is to use a pair of lucas FT57 lamps, to keep with the Fordson tractor theme. I have some here, but they are more like spot lamps, so may not really be practical. They are 7” so I may try them for size at a later date.

Anyway, the headlights staying like this for now….

 

Step away from the headlights. They are perfect as they are now. IMHO.

I pushed it outside today whilst I swept out the workshop. I’m happy with it so far….

 

Are you confident in your steering geometry? That is a pretty severe up angle on the steering link. Unless it's just an effect from the photo.

 

Thanks for raising that. I will keep it in mind.
If you look closely, you will see that the steering box is not fitted in this shot. I still have some setting up to do in that area, including adjusting the steering arm and lengthen the drag link.

Very nice work, I am enjoying reading through this thread – question – other than a dropped front axle and some springs possibly removed at the rear what more have you done to get the stance the way it is? From your earlier photos it doesn’t look like you stepped the Frame?

To get the rear end lower, the spring has been fitted behind the axle. This involves stretching the chassis (by around 7” I think) and allows the spring perches to be positioned 4” lower than stock.
The frame and spring mounts had already been modified when I bought the project so I am unsure what the exact measurements are.
I am sure there is plenty of info regarding this technique on the H.A.M.B.

I also plan on fine tuning the ride hieght and stiffness by removing some spring leaves front and rear. I think the springs are way too stiff at the moment.

A few more little jobs ticked off this week. Gauge layout finalised and holes cut, lap belts installed and keyway cut in the steering shaft

 

I got my carb risers painted and fitted, which has put the scoops just where I wanted them.

 

Looks just right!

 

I made up a rear nudge bar from some stainless tube and bends.
