I reckon lace with several coats of clear, sanded between coats of course. Should make it that heavy you'll never pick it up to install it.

  2. Lakewood bellhousings are painted inside, should make for easier cleaning and protection.

Paint it, that will help the oil run out of it faster. Gloss white would show the oil faster.

Back in 1962 I pulled the flathead out of my 33 coupe and put a 327 in using an adapter to mate it to my 40 sideshift trans. My buddies and I would drink heavily during those times and we discussed the need to build a scatter shield. For whatever reason I decided it was not needed but one of my wise ass friends said I should at least paint arrows on the inside of the bellhousing so the clutch pieces would know which way to go if it came apart. Since the housing and trans bell were painted I went ahead and painted some black arrows on the orange painted parts. The coincidence with this thread is that I happened to move that transmission a couple of weeks ago and smiled as I saw those arrows still evident after all these years. So to answer the OP's question, yes I would paint the inside of the bellhousing, which I do for any parts that are exposed to outside elements that are constantly exposed to oil or grease.

    Folks,

I didn't start this because I'm trying to build a show car. I started it to see if there is an advantage or drawback to paint on the inside of a bellhousing. STRICTLY what's good or bad regarding painting it. Will it help or harm anything?

I'm sorry if I've wasted your time.

I'd use a lighter color of paint so if you did need to take a peek inside from underneath you will have some contrast and not everything will look black.

You didn't waste our time. We used the thread as amusement in these bleak, sometimes serious times. My apologies.

I've used the Glyptal paint on my nailhead build for no other reason then that I like the way it looks.

By the way, I appreciate everyone who gave a serious answer. I have now painted the inside white. After I put a second coat on it I will post pictures

Ok. I wasn't nearly as careful with the inside as I was with the outside.

Now to go take the T-400 off of the 425 and start putting this stuff on.

I got a rebuilt ‘39 box that was painted on the inside, - I thought that if the guy was that pedantic to paint the inside, that he probably took care with the rebuild. - runs beautifully……
actually, atch - that came out really good….

After seeing that I would probably go to the trouble of painting the next one also. Just seems more finished.
(And it helps improve your painting skills).

Nothing, except an historical lesson in linguistics.

Towne, an archaic spelling of the word town, is a surname, and may refer to: Benjamin Towne publisher of the first American daily newspaper, ...

There are some who would find the combination of "Seafoam Green" and "Carmine Red" off-putting but I find it absolutely delightful, don'tcha know?. ;)

Write yourself a note in there and date it! Done that with some of my projects, kind of fun to come across it months or even years later. My uncle recently pulled the door panel out of his' 69 Z/28 and found a note he wrote over twenty years ago... brought back some memories for him.

  30. if I had a bellhousing that looked that nice, I wouldn't want to hide it on a build, I'd make a lamp out of it.
