Was it kind of sad day? I think I would be sad to see it go, but you do what you must. Like you said, there will be others.
Well this could use a better ending! Well the new owner (at that time) brought it back for me to finish off all those bits and pieces and give it the birthday it deserved! first on the list, finishing off the rear section behind the seat.
After the metal finishing was done it was on to making a new piece for the rear out of some Tazzie Oak. And polished stainless button head bolts. A small amount of body work, some colour matching and it was in the booth getting some colour, I was definitely happy with the turn out.
Quick horn bracket, Unfortunately no open wheels here is Aus (although I did for over a year) it was time to fabricate some up, I purchase the fenders from Deluxe metal shaping co over East. They showed up promptly and were the perfect fit. Then it was creating a mount that wasn’t overly intrusive and still complimented the car. I like to make them fit tight allowing about 15mm of clearance.
Back into the booth for primer and paint 2 pack “Deep Black” Really happy with how these turned out Then it was new tail lights and License plate bracket/light
After doing a hot lap around town to test out the new fenders it was time to get some shade. I ended up using KwikTops roof kit, after lots of measuring and trimming I got the bows sitting where I liked. Then it was time to lay several rolls of tape to get the desired profile. Then it was off to see Grant at Kieth Williams Upolstery. He’s the man! And gets exactly what I’m after, I barely had to explain what I wanted he already knew, and he knocked this one out of the park! Also has small panels around the window fram so if door panels were made they would have a tight fit so no weather would come through
With the new top on the stance needed to be addressed. Lowering was always on the list but wanted to see what the top looked like for the overall profile. We wanted to utilize the mechanical brakes still and after a conversation with Alex (steelsmith) about the steps he did I was able to find a set of original 32 spindles and perches. This allowed me to use the 4 inch drop axle and just needed to heat and tend to to steering and drag link arms. I removed the front leaf spring and ‘reversed’ it using a bottle jack and a little jig in the tube bender. This definitely takes time. And slow and steady is how you win this one. Little by little. It did take small trail and error setting up the front height, few leafs removed- a few added. Until the height was found. Modified F1 mounts were bolted in and new shocks fitted. The rear was much the same, I used a Model T spring as my profile, unfortunately it had a damaged eye so I used the profile and bent the Model A spring to the same profile. Surprised to see it came out perfect. Then this again was the treatment of adding springs putting the car on it own weight and seeing the overall stance and clearance. I’m sure there many ways of doing this but it was great to create this stance utilizing original parts and doing it way the it was done before. Ready for photo spam!
It came along way, and really enjoyed the process with this one. It’s now off to another new owner who is enjoying it every day. Plans have been made. The parts pile has grown strong and in two weeks time I’ll start to build the next one I plan to keep for a long time (maybe) Stay tuned and keep an eye out for the new build called Bennetts Customs ‘Midnight Special’ this will be a 29 roadster on 32 rails 36 rear end 32 heavy 40 ford brakes flatty with all the necessary speed parts 40 ford wheels 39 Pontiac tail lights 46 ford steering wheel and a 34 Buick dash. I’ll post a link here to the new thread once I purchase the rails and crossmember next week. Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Years. May 2022 be a better year for all. After and before
This was the last lap I did before it left. Be sure to subscribe to the channel for the future build as it will be a series ending with a very cool race at the end of the year.
Man have you got Style down to a science @jordabennett...absolutely breathtaking Hotrod...Thanks for sharing the journey with us...new build coming...2022's looking brighter already...membership has it's privileges indeed...
Beautiful build from top to bottom - very tasteful. I think the cycle fenders are the cleanest I've seen. Your shop is nicer than my house. Thank you for sharing.
I enjoyed the story of the cars in this. You have a very focused way of going about things - very interesting and informative. I was just getting attached to the new one when you sold it too. You are practical about such things. Thanks for posting all of this. Can you tell me what the that car was in the background? I know it's off-topic, but maybe you can whisper ; ) Should be ok as long as we don't go on about it. Edit: I couldn't find a thread on your newest car. I hope you'll bring us along, either here or on another thread.
I’m guessing if I sift threw your videos I’d find the answer but I’ll ask here anyways. On your fenders, do the braces go all the way over the tire/ under the width of the fender? Other than the week at the inner edge how are they attached to the brace? they look fantastic, really enjoy your content
thank you for the words! Means a lot. It was definitely a fun little roadster. Definitely a regrettable sale this one! But on to the next! Below is a thread to the most current one at the moment https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/bennetts-‘midnight-special’-speedster.1257714/
Hey Tim- I used 8mm flat bar and graphed it into the thinker material. A v’d end made it easy and strong, made sure it was as close as I could get it to the tire with consideration to the growth of the tire.
Great job. Shows you don't need to spend big bucks to have a cool car. You are very talented and creative.
