Technical paint the inside of a bell housing; yes or no???

I've got the outside of my nailhead bellhousing looking pretty spiffy. The inside is now very clean also. Should I paint the inside or rub some oil on it (to prevent rust) and use it as is?

I could use a bellhousing just like that with the cross shaft. What Buicks used those? Do you have the bottom cover as well?

 

Nailhead engines. I'm pretty sure that all of the GS Buicks in the mid 60's used this bell housing. I don't know about earlier ones. I'll be using this one on a 425.

Sure don't. I'll be looking for one myself.

 

You'd know that it's been done to your satisfaction if done, however it's not necessary IMHO. I removed this OEM T10 FE unit when it was replaced with an aluminum one with lower cover. I cleaned it, 'a la natural', for sale.

 

Put a fine coat inside,,,,,won’t hurt a thing .

Fine coat of paint or fine coat of oil?

 

Just paint it if you are worried about corrosion.

 

I hadn't even thought of corrosion. This thing's over 50 years old and didn't have a speck of corrosion or rust in it. I'm just more interested in what everyone else has done.

 

Truthfully fully it would take hundreds of years for it to rust and do any damage. It's whatever makes you feel better.

A outstanding job like that deserves paint. How about a contrasting color, grey or Ford engine green?

 

There's a thought. I hadn't thought of anything but black.

That's why I ask questions on here. I don't have much imagination and a lot of you do.

 

If you do paint it, sign your name in there. That way the next person will know who went to all of the trouble to paint the inside.

Paint the inside an awesome color, nice idea. If, I someday take my project car back apart, I will follow this advice.

Maybe a little pin striping inside also? Or, even a small, decal. That will give the next owner something to talk about.

 

Rear main seal will leave a coating of oil on the inside for ya'.

 

FWIW... what I like to do on stockish looking rebuilds
Intake and WPs usually get sprayed in AL or Fe colors, whatever their natural color is.
Damper and pulleys are usually gloss black with timing numbers/marks in yellow with base timing and TDC in red and white. Makes for easy timing checks.
Simple subtle contrast will make an engine really pop.
Black can hide ugly stuff, but it can also make a component disappear into the underhood ether.
Lighter colors can also help you locate items when you drop them. Lot easier to find a dropped bolt on a AL colored intake than on a dark green or blue one.

Paint the inside of the bell the same red glyptal color for electric motors. Often used for painting the inside of an engine for better oil drainage.

 

That will then protect the paint.

 

And...
Make it easier to wipe out.

If it's been cleaned it should stick and stay.
But, as stated, you need to leave a legacy in there. "I cared enough about this rebuild to paint in here, signed, dated"

Rest of it looks really pretty though.

 

Definitely paint it. If you ever do have oil splashing around, it will show up better, maybe not so much on black. I did mine in Chevy orange since I had a big can of it.

I have never painted the inside of a bell housing but I never have given it any thought, I can't see where it would hurt so go ahead and paint it if you like. HRP

I powder coated mine, I still don't know why.
