I asked the same question on another occasion. Turns out he wore a helmet with a feathered headdress.

George Hutcheson “The Stone-Age Man”. He also drove the “Rat Trap” fuel altered few times.

The red 64 is my all time favorite dodge hardtop. 383/4spd would make it perfect

    Hello,

Back in 2017, I was a part of the presentation for the old historic films of Lion’s Dragstrip shown at the grand opening of the original Lion’s Dragstrip Museum at the Price Transfer Industrial Complex. It was a privilege to be a participant to allow people to see how it was back in 1958-60 at Lion’s Dragstrip, from a teenager’s point of view.

One of the popular events in So Cal was the thundering sounds of fuel burning dragsters firing up in front of people. The smell of the fumes brought memories of action and eye watering distinction to those that attended the early, local dragstrips.

Bill Pitts had an idea about top fuel dragsters and the general public. We all know people are attracted to all sorts of dangerous things and the huge supercharged hemi motors gave everyone chills at the loud sound reverberating anywhere they fired up.

“Why not bring the cars into an urban environment, on the street, where they can be seen (and especially, heard) by local folks? The city administrators of Escondido liked his plan and gave Pitts the opportunity to present his cars at the intersection of Broadway and East Grand Street, in the heart of their gentrified downtown.”

So goes the beginning of the Cacklefests and yearly Nitro Revival festivals.

At night, the flames are impressive and the smell of the burning nitro fumes permeates the air. But, in the daylights, it is hard to see the flames as the sounds take over the presentation. I wanted to showcase how much those huge supercharged engines created a flaming spectacular show, even during the daytime showings. Daytime flames are hard to see and the color shows the ability of the burning nitro exhausts.

The color editing was put in place to showcase the flames shooting out of Bill Pitt’s “Magicar” versions of the golden color FED originally owned by Ron Winkle, Kay Trapp and Kent Fuller.
