I was drivin' back to the "Rancho", one afternoon, after parts-chasing, and there was a farm auction going on... the (deceased) guy had been a Blacksmith/mechanic most of his life, so the stuff was AMAZING. I pulled over. HAD to check it out. Checked my wallet... $3. Just then, the auctioneer held up a baby-food jar. "Little wrenches", he declared. Start at $5!... crickets... I bid 50 cents, and ended up with a jar of ignition wrenches, in 64ths, up to 1/2"... and some others. The "Others" were old, and odd. I went home, and dumped 'em out. In addition to the generic wrenches, here's what I found... Several of 'em have feeler gages for both points and magnetos. I use the oil jug for display.
Got these when I was helping a long-term friend move out of state. He got these from his wife's father many years ago when he died at the age of 87 in 2010. My friend is not mechanically minded at all, and asked if I wanted them. Of course I said yes! I have no idea what the one with all of the different sizes of"saw teeth" is used for. Any guesses out there? ATTACH=full]5278748[/ATTACH]
Saw teeth...that's a thread pitch gauge like this. It tells threads per inch (or metric) when correct one fits bolt (etc).
I've also got the hand-tool kit for a "Hand-Sawyer", or whatever... Thread gauge, Saw-tooth or whatever... they're amazing.
Workin' for the family ranch didn't pay much, but I got cheap rent... which allowed me to splurge, and spend my $3.
Okay, my dad was a mechanic so I am familiar with ignition tools. That being said I have this set that I bought at an antique store in Amarillo, Texas and I can’t figure out how its supposed to work. What are the bushing-like rings for? And the little wheel with the numbers?
Let’s see if I can insert a link from my phone. https://p15-d24.com/topic/36736-anyone-ever-use-a-snap-gap-tool-to-set-the-points/ Drop the appropriate ring over the cam in the distributor and adjust the point gap without having to rotate to the high spot on the cam.
Thanks, I never thought of that because the rings just looked too big for the distributor cams. Thanks again.
Found in My GreatGrandPa’s tools . He ran McCormick Deering and IHC tractors The gap gauges read spark plug gap Beaker points
"Always on the Job". I like that. Looks like we have a few in common... I l ike the IHC logo. Here's some more "Man-Cave" kinda stuff. My Man-Cave might be a bit more "Cave-Like" than some...
