This is my one and only '50s car, a 1957 DeSoto convertible. It's a factory hot rod with a 345 horsepower, 345 cubic inch, dual quad Hemi.

    It's a '49 but I think it qualifies as a 50's mild custom.

    Hello,

When I was able to get my brother’s 58 Chevy Impala after he was finished with it, another world opened up to me. In late 1960, I had my 40 Ford Flathead Sedan Delivery, but it was for our daily drives to school and to the So Cal beaches for surf sessions.

I had already been used to the 58 Impala, as I was with my brother when he raced the it at Lion’s Dragstrip. I was the mechanic, parts runner, Positraction changer from 4:11 to 4:56 every week we raced in class. I was technically the detail person as I was responsible to keep the car clean, although I was not able to drive it around on Friday and Saturday nights.

1959 (me) Timed run with Bruce Slicks KS Pittman cross

So, with the history of the Impala, I had been the one to record various films of it racing. When I was 15.5, I was finally able to get behind the wheel for several timing runs and my first elimination races at Lion’s Dragstrip. My brother finally filmed some timed runs and races that I was driving.

To me, I did not want to lose this car in the future. I was supposed to get my brother’s 51 two door Oldsmobile sedan for my first car, but it got sold. So, this Impala is/was a keeper.

1958 to 1960 variations in looks, when I was driving the 58 Impala.

After our 1940 Willys 671 SBC build for C/Gas, the 58 Impala was the tow car. When the Willys racing days were over, it stayed in the family, as my mom wanted it for her daily driver. But, only if I would teach her to drive a stick shift Impala. After many tries and some long afternoons, it was a failed project.

She could not learn to drive the stick shift, but would pay to get the transmission changed over to an automatic. My mom really liked the Impala, as it fit her needs and was not as big as our dad’s Buick Roadmaster. Then the C&O era came into being for the next 4 years, until I sold the Impala in 1965 to go away to college.

1959 to 1965, the silver rims to Skylark Wire Wheel modifications to all black/black prior to selling it to a friend. The last vision was the black on black Impala sitting in a Shell Gas Station parking lot in 1965, as we drove away, never to see it again.

Gotgas, I really dig your car! It was an inspiration to me in seeking out and finding my 57 DeSoto.
