Happy New Year HAMB crew.. Looking to see if anyone knows of anybody reproducing or that has some good photos of old style tow tabs..I flat towed a car to the track and would love to get “the look” for the front of my Falcon..
1/4" x 2" steel strap with a big hole in it, one per side, preferably cut to length, and the hole cut with, a torch
...heh....my point was, that if you are buying them instead of making them, you're probably doing it wrong.
Not tabs, just the remains on the Nomad I'm re-doing this winter. Driveline that was in car had ported heads, locking rocker adjusters, headers, scattershield, early Muncie 4 speed(1965). Don't have history on car, but think they may have weekend raced it.
I flat tow my '60 Corvette with a self-designed tow bar (using finite element software) that attaches to the frame.....I remove the front "bumpers" and bolt it where those attach. Works very well.
The last set I made for an OT Nova was made like that.... no frills. Flat black paint hides a lot of ills...
I've towed two of my gassers to the drags on numerous occasions. I just made up a pair of 1/4" plates in an "L" shape to attach the the frame rails, and bring the attachment point down below the front fenders. You want to try to have the tow bar as level as possible, or it can tow poorly. When I tow my cars into the drags I get a lot of puzzled looks, and even some who came over and said I was nuts to flat tow. Hear all the horror stories about nice cars wrecked while flat towing in the past, but mine both tow like they're not even back there.
Thread "look what followed me home today" by Racer-x. Page 12 then scroll down. They are NMW part number B-30 for flat towing a car. Nice large pics.
I'm about to fabricate something like these for my 64 Fairlane once I settle on a template. They attach via bumper bar bolts. Aesthetics only and not for use.
Mine are quite a bit simpler. Used the rear bumper bolt and a weld on the side holds it in place. It serves two purposes, one to hold the car down on the trailer when towing and two to drag it up on the deck with a winch if it blows up. Man, I hope the blowing up thing never happens!
