Two years ago I re-did my 36 3W after driving it 15 years in black primer. Got rid of the 18inch 5 spoke wheels, painted it gloss black, added bumpers, changed to stock tail lights, un-frenched the license plate, and went from smooth to stock running boards. I love the look so much more.... Funny what I thought was kool 15 years ago when I built it ain't now :)

Photos were taken on my trip from Minnesota to LA for the roadster show in 2019.

    Hello,

Driving through any coastal city, one has to be ready to take photos of old hot rods and customs. These old cars used to gather at the famous 50’s-60’s style, Tommy’s Restaurant just off of the I-5 freeway South. It was a summertime activity for all local hot rod guys/girls. That was before the restaurant closed and the Cars/Coffee took over the local hot rod/sporty car showings every week. (Until this latest closure due to the recent increase in the cases of the pandemic, locally.)

But as anyone drives down the historic El Camino Real highway (aka: Coast Highway) Like the movie title, “On Any Sunday,” those are the times when hot rods and customs are out for a cool beach cruise. There is nothing better than to get rejuvenated with the sight of the ocean and the waves lapping up onto the shoreline. For us, the sighting of old cars just adds that “pizzaz” to the local scenery.

This 36 Ford coupe was sitting in a back parking lot of an automotive repair shop that had other unusual old cars and hot rods. It was a very attractive hot rod and had an unusual topper on the license plate.

During our old hot rod days, these toppers were very popular on old cars. The AAA was/is big in So Cal and most families took advantage of the services offered back then. Today, it serves as a reminder of those old days. But, the new services of the AAA far surpass the good old days. Jump starts, battery replacements, towing services, flat bed tow trucks, etc. They are all modern conveniences of safety for the daily driver and for hot rods, too.

36 5W was slacking on body work for a while but at least it’s in one color of primer. Lol 3C899EC1-A100-4C17-9A36-52FC25429B65.jpeg

It has a rust free TX body on a brand new TCI IFS chassis. The engine is a low mileage 96 LT1 with a new 4l60 transmission. The price would be 25K should I decide to sell. I am hesitant because of all of the tire kickers out there.

Love this thread and 35s/36s. Here’s mine I finished a couple years ago. Still making tweaks here and there; for example, I can’t decide if I want to run plain wide 5s, just trim rings, or rings and spider caps.

  26. One of the "tougher" decisions, ain't it?
Suggestion: Make up two very different sets of caps, etc. I have a set of rough, original '50 Merc.
caps that are going to need some work, including re-chroming them. Meanwhile, will use a set
of repop "full moons"; then swap them around every year or so......
