  10. Yes, I think people are tired of what has become of period correct hot rodding, "Traditional" hot rodding. (Flat black paint and white walls make a car with an Art Morrison chassis, Corvette front and rear suspension, L.S. E.S.- E.I.- E.I.-O, disc brakes A/C. and a billet tilt column is Traditional you know.)

It has degenerated into sit in your lawn chair behind your car until award time, then whine and bitch and cry because you didn't win.

  11. Mohead1 here's the suspension you want to see on my dirt modified . It has a cantilever torsion bar coil over rear suspension and a coil over front .When it was built it had a Chrysler torsion bar frt. which was removed at some point . The mill is a 427 bored out to 440 cubes, Dart heads with stainless rocker arms , Crower roller cam with hi rpm spring kit for 8500 rpm , steel crank with special rods which were balanced, 13.5 forged pistons , 9 qt. circle track oil pan and heavy duty oil pump , MSD billet distributor with ignition module box and a timing retard box so I don't have to rotate dist . to retard position to start it. Also it has a Franklin quick change rear and 3 speed trans. The carb. is a demon double pumper 850 cfm for dirt track and i'm looking for a Hilborn fuel injection setup like it used to have years ago . Forgot it has Buick finned brake drums at all wheels . 14. I have had people tell me that Hot Rodding has nothing what so ever to do with racing of any kind, Dry Lakes, Drag or Oval Track! I guess all they did with hot rods back in the day (a recognized period of time) was putter to the ice cream shop, then to the sock hop and cause trouble for small town U.S.A. just like in the B-moives.

Gerry Chamberlain , Will Cagle , Kenny Shoemaker , Dave Pelczer , Jon Kellner Sr. all drove this car in this order . This is what it looked like when Chamberlain won 31 races in one season at Reading Fairgrounds . 217233523_520514222594112_4403969995408921464_n.jpg

Those cars represent the era I raced in. I love it! Still got a few of the parts and pieces from my cars. Also came across the book Jim wrote on how to build a modified chassis. Guess I should consider recreating one of the cars Jim and I raced.

There's a pretty good site, Lebanon Valley Classics, that shows an awful lot of the cars and characters that have raced the Valley over its history.

  22. Moonshiners played a part in stockcar racing, but stock car racing was wildly popular outside of the southeast as well. During the late forties-early fifties there were at least 5 or more NASCAR Sportsman sanctioned tracks near Albany.

Everyone lately seems to think only the Strickly Stocks now NASCAR cup were/are stockcars.

Stockcar refers to the body and chassis as opposed to purpose-built racecars like midgets, sprints, or Champ (Indycars)

Don't forget there was oval track racing long before there were stock car races

Midget racing was huge all over the country just after the war, but on the east coast both North and South the stockcars quickly took over.

Its all on where you lived, if you were very rural then yeah their mindset was different... There were racers, there were hotroders, sometimes the two were the same, sometimes not... The dry lakes, drag and oval are the glorified and well exploited aspects of it... Kids would read about it in the magazines, now as adults its pretty easy to make the trip, trailer and OT vehicle to tow or road trip it there. The cruising, light to light throw downs, causing trouble on a friday night, that's part of hotrodding that alot seem to have forgotten. Car shows are cool sometimes, racing is cool sometimes... Alot of the very period correct events have put more light on the racing lately... Some towns still have a good amount of people running the streets for cruise ins, and runs... I like hitting the road and sharing some lanes with my buddies more than shows anymore, but I like the shows to hang out and have fun driving around town before and after. Favorite things to do is to get together with some friends and cruise to dinner.

Back in the 60's and 70's, Vern Wilhoite, was the track champion at the Merced Speedway. Any fellow, old timers, from Atwater California, will remember that !

Happening down here too, this was 2019, headed out again this September.

I agree, I prefer using my cars up sitting in the drivers seat, than looking at them sitting on a lawn chair!
