I got kinda lucky on buying this car. My friend offered it to another friend of ours first and he said, "I would have bought it but just couldn't stand the color".
A bit of confusing trivia. The engine-turned side molding indicates an SS, but there are no emblems stating such on the quarter panels. Are the front seats buckets? Just curious which it is. The body number on the firewall tag would ID it for sure.
Oilguy, I'm going to fess up something here. It has a bench seat and it's not an SS. My friend told me not to worry about painting the trim. I said ok. Next time I saw it, it had SS trim. I asked him and he said he liked the SS trim better than the painted. But here is the kicker. That is a kit. It's a pre-cut tape insert. I couldn't tell the difference. I didn't have a clue you could buy those. Granted it's not real SS trim, but if you have nice trim it's a sneaky way to go. LOL.
I like it, a very pretty car, and just a few things done to it but a bigger engine and some different caps and modified side trim makes it a very mild custom/hotrod I guess. That's all you need for a car like this. Glad you got it and not someone who'd rip that 6 out for some LS engine and 20" wheels or something dumb like that. You're the perfect caretaker.
The '62 is my favorite year for Impalas too! I like that the six is staying. It is after all, an endangered species! Dare to be different! Everybody and their cousin yanks 'em out and puts a V8 in.
That car is beautiful. While I'd personally certainly prefer a big 8 in there, ss clones are pretty common. I'd leave it as is. It's different. Awesome as it sits.
Stillrunners, the dealer script on the trunk says SIGHT BROS. Then there's a sticker on the trunk that says, NUFER AUTO SALES 98 2nd st. Dodge City Kansas. Lippy
You are right...I bought a 1969 Camaro from the original owner. He ordered it with a 350", 2 barrel and 3 speed on the column and bucket seats. I have never seen another one like that. Bob
Bob, I bought a used 66 Nova SS with a bench seat and a 327-350 L-79 and a 3 spd on the column. From a chevy dealers used car lot. One of 4. It was a mix-up on the order form. Was supposed to be a 283 2bbl with deluxe interior. lol.
Can't beat a 62! Nice looking Impala and congrats on the new ride! My Dad's 62 back in the day. 283, powerglide. My sister and I used to ride in the back when we were kids and go to drive in movies with Mom and Dad.
You had to mark the 4 speed box on the order sheet or you got the column shift 3 speed on those cars.
Beautiful car, I love 1962 and 63 full size Chevies. If the “sicks” runs good, I’d leave it too, I love a fine inline. If they still made cars like that, my daily would not be a pickup truck!
I love the color but I don’t believe it is very common. A high school friend of my brother’s had one with black rims and black walls (1967). He sold it when he got drafted. A couple of years back I saw a restored one at the Ozark Swapmeet in Springfield, MO. The only two I have ever seen in that color(Both in Missouri).
Sport coupes had the side trim in 62. SS would been an additional package. http://www.348-409.com/1962factpage.html
The color reminds me of Cashmere Blue from 1955. I would love to have a 261 in my 55 2door. Great car, Lippy.
Stillrunners, it's the only pic I could find of the Sight Bros dealership. Boy that google stuff sure opens doors. LOL. Thats earlier than 62 but I bet thats where this car came from. Lippy
Love the car and the color My vote is for a 283 or 327 with the 327 valve covers, you could sell the 261 to belair, all things will be in their right place and peace will guide the planets Norb
Ok little update. Took the 62 to a car show last summer and drove it around locally quite a bit. The 261 is a torque monster. 70 down the hi-way. I forgot how wonderful these old impalas ride. I did have to remove the bias tires, didn't want to but they were square. It still has 14's Got a pair of chrome reverse for the front but need two 14x6 for the rear. Can't seem to find any good ones.
