My brother has dragged home a 62 Falcon, and I was kinda struck by the factory choke knob in the dash. I just can't remember right now seeing that in another 60s US car. I'd think some pickups probably had them, can't remember clearly all the 60s pickups I had over the years. Who all has one?

Interestingly, my 62 comet which is a sister car doesn't have one. My 67.5 Datsun 1600 Roadster did however.

    Hipo Ford 289 and 427, I think, through 1967.

Unfortunately I never had the good fortune to own one, though.

My wife’s 1977 BMW had one. We lived in Europe when we owned it, so I don’t know about the US versions.

I had a few cars with the manual choke from the factory. Every Ford Custom Cab pickup at the beer distributor I worked for had one.

My dad had a 66 International pickup with a manual choke and a dash mounted manual throttle kinda like a tractor.
He used it as a poor man's cruise control.

Full size Fords in 64 with a six is about the last and the smaller cars could be later and around 72 for light duty trucks and possibly longer on larger trucks and probably the same with GM trucks too. Larger GM cars was most likely in the mid 40s since none of the early 50s Olds I had came with a manual choke, never seen a manual choke on a mid 60s and up Chevy car.

Many low end European cars still had Carbs until 1991 when stronger emission laws forced most of them to go EFI. A few Eastern Cars like Ladas and Skodas still had Carbs in 1996!

My 1960 VW was the last year for the manual choke. Had a Pontiac with a 455 that I converted to manual choke, along with a couple of OT cars. Friend of mine had a car that would flood with the choke, something that I fixed by drilling a couple of 1/2" holes in the choke plate.

Interesting, I thought 1987 or thereabouts was the last hurrah for carburetors, at least in the U. States.

  26. 68 was the last year on C10's and 20's based on original paperwork. The gauge panels all had the choke hole, but V8 trucks had a delete plate.

Larger trucks might have kept them on certain applications. Its a mess trying to figure out original stuff on those things.

  29. High end vehicles in the Middle East; Mercedes, BMW for instance were still carbureted in 2004. Some with a manual choke as well as the Eastern Europe in the Ukraine and no pollution controls. A lot do not have seat belts let alone shoulder belts and air bags and collapsible bumpers. Then again, they don't have Ralph Nader or lawyers.

  30. The early falcons with 6's had manual chokes. I had a 64 Fairlane with the hipo 289, no manual choke. I was around many 428 cobra jets, no manual chokes, I drove a 69 mustang boss 302, no manual choke. Most had the heat riser from the exhaust manifold and the clock spring chock assembly. Many were converted because of failure to get the choke adjusted properly.
