It’s about 6” or so and is part of the pan gasket set. I soak mine in oil for a day and then use a razor blade to trim it after I’ve stuffed into the groove

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but a medical condition has had me laid up for several weeks. Another visit tomorrow with the heart people and I should be ready to go. I did Contact Donovan and they told me what they told you, no new production of the Alum. Model D 4 Banger. By the way I wasn't trying to start a rumor I was just asking if anyone had heard if production was going to be resumed.

For Sale. 30-31 Model A Ford Chassis with late 20s Chevy engine and trans. The engine and trans were mounted in the chassis years ago. I’m told it was driven up until 5 years ago, the body was removed recently. I put some gas in the carbs and it ran and sounded good. The carbs need a rebuild, plugs wires, etc. but the engine seems good. Frame needs some repairs and it needs a wishbone mount. $1,800. Located in Atascadero Ca.

  I believe that's a chevy 490 engine 24hp. Why would you do that when a model a ford engine is 40hp?

  I am by no means an expert but I do know that up to 1927 Chevrolet had a single port intake until 1928 when they came out with the 2port intake head that was a big improvement. Before that was the Oldsmobile head that had two intake and 3 exhaust ports which was popular for more power on the earlier Chevy motors for racing or just more get up and go for the hot rod younger crowd ?

Hey guys, I'm gathering parts for my 30 coupes engine build. I should be getting my Burtz block within the month, I've already have my stipe cam in a 340 grind along with modern valves with oversized intake valves. I also have a Charlie Yapp rocket 428 head coming. My question is carbs. I have 2 holley 94's ones a 1939 the other a 40. With this combo can I run dual carbs if jetted correctly and set up with the correct power valve. Trying to spend my limited funds wisely. Thanks

 

i talk to very few guys that seem to get two carbs to run right .I run one 97 on mine it it goes pretty good for not doing to much tuning. I like to keep things simple. Using two 81s seem to be the best set up.

 

Yeah, I'd love to run some stromberg 81's on it. I found both holleys when I was picking up parts that my grandfather had for the car, he had another car with a built b engine until my grandmother made him get rid of it. I'm building this in tribute

 

@burl just wondering what size jets and power valve you are running on the 97?

My setup runs too rich - 0.040" up B, Winfield head and cam, headers, 97 on a burns intake, Not that dissimilar to your setup

 

I'm new to the banger phenom... Who supplies oversize intake valves for the model A?

With that cam/head combo I suspect that you will have way more carb than the engine can handle. Keep in mind that the larger the bore, the lower the air velocity thru the carburetors. That has a real effect on the performance of the carbs thru the RPM range.
I was running an engine with a Stipe 340 cam, and it was way fat(AFR didn't read below 10:00/1 and it stuck there) with one Holley 94 and had the power valve blocked it did better and that was one 94
I changed to a Stromberg 97 and the engine is lots happier and performs better all around.
Heads up, the Stipe 340 cam doesn't start pulling until about 1500 RPM so unless you are running something other than a stock 3 speed the 2nd-3rd shift and off the line....unless you run okie overdrive

 

I just did a dyno session with a single 97 with a Stipe 340 cam and the head is a Riley cast iron flathead with a 170 CC chamber and with the fly cut, head gasket and bore of .040 over it is just under 5.5/1 Compression Ratio
Started with a 42 main jets and a 67 power valve. This was at 5500' elevation It did the highest, rear wheel, horse power pull, 54.28 HP@ 3430 rpm and 88.83 ft/lb torque@ 3110 rpm (it's the cam) but was between 10.5 and 11 air fuel ratio.
Did some jet changing and leaned it out and the last run was with 40 main jets and stayed with the 67 pv
It ran between 14 and 14.5 afr but lost 5 hp and 4 ft/lb of torque. I guess a difference between an economy tune and a 'power' tune
Hope this helps and I may go a size larger (smaller number) on the power valve and stay with the 40 main jet

This set up is probably suffering from a higher rise cam and a lower compression head combination but I am also running a 3 speed with a Mitchell OD so that is some rear wheel horsepower loss along with bias tires.
It is a real drivable car though...

Antique Engine Rebuilding has a 'kit' that has modern SS valves, guides, keepers, springs and the intakes are 1.730"

Dennis Pariano has large intakes but he is currently out of them. I believe that they are 1.8++
I bought AER's last kit earlier in the week but Missy said that she had more on order.
You can use GM valves, I believe 472/500 caddy but they have a different stem size and length

I think the main was .041 or .043 cant remember. Its all changed since then and I haven't had much time to get things tuned. Different head ,and distributor . The head has a completely different combustion chamber and should be able to flow the new large 97.I had a new large 97 on it but it was running to rich and I didn't spend the time to get that to work. Will get back to it eventually after I get my roadster project together.
