    Hello,

    Throughout Los Angeles and other older cities and communities, are several old gas stations. This one was a Texaco Gas Station in the Silverlake area. (halfway between downtown LA and the famous Griffith Park Observatory... recent Adele concert ) The Texaco Gas Station was pretty good looking and the one in Bixby Knolls, our local Texaco gas stop, looked similar, with the exception of two rows of gas pumps.

    This was a headline three years ago:

    “Will Silver Lake’s 1940s Texaco Be Saved From Demolition?”

    Now an auto shop, the Streamline Moderne structure could become a landmark…

    Back then, Texaco was the biggest name in gas stations. Known as the Texas Fuel Company, it became one of the first national gasoline distributors in 1928.

    The Silver Lake Station, which was built in 1941, was part of that boom. And, while it was retired as a filling station and converted into an independent auto mechanic’s shop in 1988, it’s original Streamline Moderne bones remain almost entirely intact.

    So, what happened to the Texaco gas station? It was dismantled and is now stored in a maintenance yard of Los Angeles city confines. It is waiting for the city to designate the location on the Los Angeles River area for the proposed drawing and usage. The LA City Government has been trying to make the LA River location work. They want to make it into a metropolitan destination and walk way for people/bicyclists to enjoy the upper regions of the river. The converted gas station will be preserved and made into an outdoor café in the near future.

    Proposed LA River bank location

    It would have been nice to see it restored to its Texaco origins and run as a real gas station. But, who can fight city hall?

    Hey jnaki. Most folk ain't got the kind of respect for grease pits, as we do.
    Myself,,, If it's time for an oil change, and supper is on. I'll still be hungry when I see that gold on my dipstick.

  13. I've posted this photo of one in my town before in another gas station thread. It's not derelict or restored but it's repurposed as a dentist's office....... or, to replay my previous joke comment, "It's still a filling station".

    04B4D693-B45F-419A-9967-A663F58F1EDD.jpeg A work in progress in NZ .the owner got a fuel company to make new pumps with a vintage feel. Knowing the owner it will look cool when finished. A little difficult to make a digital world look analogue. Apologies for the modern scene spoiler in front .

    Below is a picture showing a 1930 era Joy gas station on the north west corner of Lakeshore Blvd and Windermere Ave in Toronto, as it looked in 1977. It was the only survivor of the 16 that once existed in Toronto.

    The structures were relocated to a nearby park and restored as shown here;
