    Just to stir the pot.

I just took the pair of Carters off of my blower, and put on a set of Holleys.

Those have a total of eight fuel injectors.

  3. Yes a topic like this is like answering the question, "how long is a string?"

Jon, you forgot the "Urban Legend".... You know, That mystery carburetor that was on your good friend's cousin's that knew a guy's grandpaw's 1974 Cadillac that got 45 miles to the gallon with incredible performance. The one that was mysteriously removed by the dealer when granpaw bragged about the mileage at the first oil change.

As long as you're happy with what you have, the brand shouldn't be important. I have a Holley 4150 Street Avenger 570 that will be replacing a Holley 4000 "Teapot." Ford Performance Parts equips their $11,000 Windsor crate engines with the Street Avenger 570, and the recommend the same for crate engines without carbs. On the other hand, a family member has had a 600 cfm Edelbrock on his 65 Mustang for years/w no complaints.

The best comparison is the proper use of an air cleaner. Cover what ever you choose. The bigger the better. Holley, Carter, Edelbrock, Summit, WCFB, Rochester, etc… a stainless or chrome cake cover which already has a center hole works wonders.
Personally if what you have doesn’t leak even from the top screws your already miles a head…

  12. Ok, I'll bite..... Years ago I bought a 14' flatbottom boat with a 350 sbc/v-drive with a Carter AFB on it. NEVER did I ever have to take it apart and do anything to it for over 10 years. It would start and run every time I punched the start button. A few years later, I built a '69 Camaro with a 454 in it and put a Holley (the best I remember) that had the paper gaskets on the bowls. If I didn't start it up every couple of weeks, the bowls would leak gas all over the engine. I know, the gaskets these days are better, but not back in the '70's. So, when I built The Judge with a 383 Stroker, I elected to use an Edelbrock, since it's a descendent of the Carter. Out of the box, it was a bit "chunky", so I put a digital AFR gauge on it and noted the various readings under various loading conditions. Then I got the "tuning chart" from Edelbrock, and selected "correction" rods and jets, installed them with only taking the top off to install, and since then, the performance has been PERFECT, even when going up hill in cold weather in 4th gear lockup (700R4 with Jag XJS 2.88 ratio - rear end at 1,200 rpm and also with an AIR GAP manifold that everybody seems to think is junk. No, it's not a drag car, but a schizophrenic luxury car, that can change personality with a flip of a switch and push on the throttle. I LOVE the performance. Over 10,000 miles on her since I finished the build and not a single hiccup .....Shoot me....

  15. The older I get, the more I realize that the stock carburetor is best most of the time. There are a few exceptions, the Motorcraft/Autolite 4300/4350 comes to mind. I’ve used both Edelbrock and Holley, and for me it would boil down to intended use. Drag Racing, Holley, simply due to parts availability. Street, Quadrajet is my first choice on a Chevy, but have a great running 600 Holley on my 351. Whatever makes you happy.

  18. I have never reallyt had a problem with Holleys leaking. Maybe it has to do with my penchant of keeping my carb in good shape. LOL

I have a personal preferance for holley carbs. They are easy to work on and perform well. I do like a carter AFB, I got an idea that you are not actually going to find an Edelbrock AFB as they have not made new AFBs in decades. Most of the Edelbrock carbs that I have run across are actually Weber carbs.

If you are willing to put the time in either carb can be made to perform.

I like and use the Edelbrock carb and intake.
They just look sorta outta place on a Ford engine.
Tuning one can't get much simpler
