Technical 59A Flatty. A good candidate for rebuild? It's full of sludge!

Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. In this week's video I turn my attention to the first of my flathead stash. Lets delve into this old 59A flathead and see if it is suitable for rebuild.
People mention use of detergent and non detergent oils. From what I saw in this motor it lead me to form some opinions on that score.
So sit back and chill while I get elbows deep in this dirty old flatty.

  2. Good o' reconditioned oil - 15cents verses the good stuff at 30cents a quart - is what it looks like it was running ! I'd be hoping for no cracks....

  3. Mart,

I always enjoy your engine videos,,,,a lot of good details to help identify these old engines.

Sludge will clean out. Cracks don't

  6. That one spot is probably a casting flaw,,,,some have a funny line in there sometimes .
It can easily be Mag checked there and see for sure .

Sludged is far better than rusted solid.
