I took a pic of 2 pictures hanging on the wall at Lipsitzs scrap metal business in Waco Texas. They have been buying scrap metal & junk cars since 1895.Not very good quality because of reflections.
Cool pics . rickety old crane and cars suspended by chains. big difference to the forklifts , crushers and shredders of today ! Hell of a job back then to scrap out a car I bet. Cool pics thanks for sharing
I'm most surprised by the intact tops on all of those open cars in the second pic. I would have guessed cars of this era would have been pounded much more mercilessly than that before they got junked. Neat pics although kinda sad to see.
Typically, scrap drives started in 1942. Since there aren't any cars past the mid-twenties, I'd guess that its more like 1929-31, unless there is another part of the yard devoted to newer cars. Interestingly, there's little body damage visible. Both Ford and GM had scrapping plans where they paid dealers to scrap driveable but tired cars. They claimed it was to promote safety, but I doubt anyone was fooled.
