Hot Rods Picked up a 1929 Ford Roadster altered with an injected olds motor

On another thread I was asking for info on the olds motor and ended up buying everything so I figured I'd start a new thread. Haven't run any numbers yet except the heads and they seem to be 394 olds and perhaps the lower end is 371. The Sun remembers the dad saying it had forged pistons 13 1/2 to 1 compression balanced, the hilborn injection and the mag. Going to have to tear down to see what exactly is in it. He said the last time he raced it was in the mid-60s and it ran in the 10 S range. The headers , adapter plate for the trans is missing and so is the hood. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves for now and get an update on the rest of the parts once I inventory it. The son said it had a Cadillac LaSalle trans in it but blew it up and change it to this one and I'm not exactly sure what it is . The motor was built in 1993 and never was fired

I pulled a spark plug out and I could see the brand new Pistons and they are 60 over. I pulled the valley cover off and everything is brand new and still has assembly grease on the can but there's dust on everything so I need to come apart and be clean and put back together which is no big deal. Also to the lifter Valley I could see the rods and there are humongous and aluminum, can't wait to open this thing up maybe tomorrow I've got to work the rest of the day while this thing stares at me

Owens “Orbit” cam decal says a lot. Bought a SBC cam in 1961 thru Tom Lieb at Owens Shop. Adjustable rocker arms too.

 

Itow's automotive was in Hot Rod Mag a few times he built Dragster Chassis also do some research. 1950 1960.

 

It does have adjustable rockers I believe the cam is hydraulic by the look at the lifters and there's no slop in the Lash. Also appears that in the old picture he's running a 2 port injection. I looked high and low for that in the garage and couldn't find it. It's got an old eelco hydraulic throttle setup that look like it would have bolted to the two port.

 

That is a Cad transmission circa 39-53 and what looks like an Olds rear. Also a starter crossover from hildebrandt. Killer deal for sure. I will see if I have that block ID somewhere.

What a find !!!!!!!! I see a Crankshaft Co. decal, I had a 394 Olds with one of their cranks, 468". You have enough of the car for a simple restoration, and Eagle Field would be the place to have some fun. Best of luck with it. Also, I wonder if the Billy Williams on the mag tag, was the same guy that was a terror in the 70's in Pro-Comp, AA/AD.

Well, that is an outstanding find, straight from the 1958-60 era. It was one of the Clay Smith Cam Company supported roadsters that ran at Lion's Dragstrip almost weekly. It was dark blue and the woodpecker sticker was prominent to the point that most thought it was built by Clay Smith Cams. (Clay Smith Cams Shop was located about 3-4 blocks from our last Westside of Long Beach house.) Joe Itow was the big name on the door.

My brother and I saw it run, parked next to is several times in the Lions Dragstrip pits and loved it every time we looked at the roadster. It has a ton of history and it showed up in almost all of the Clay Smith Cam advertisements. It was known as the Herman Brothers Roadster.

"The Herman Brothers, blown Olds gas burning roadster...like many drag roadsters, it started out as a street roadster, still had the holes for the '39 Ford taillights...ran high 140s, pretty good for the time, '61-61..."

Again, what a fabulous find and history of the local racers from that era. It was a great time to be a teenager, hot rod enthusiast and active drag racer.

 

That is amazing! thank you very much for finding that information and video and I'll take whatever info you have on it to as the son didn't know much as he wasn't even born yet when the car raced.

What an incredible find!! Jnaki is spot on, the Herman brothers, blown Olds gas roadster. I watched it run many times, usually at Lions. Here is another photo taken from the stands by Lew DeLew III, racing the Hess & Windslow roadster, closest to camera. I have another photo of it racing the Durfee Motor roadster at San Gabriel that Doug Hayes took, looking for it now

Wow! The find of a lifetime!

 

This is great it just keeps getting better.

 

I got the motor on an engine stand this morning and pulled the oil pan and to my surprise some good stuff. Got forged aluminum rods forged pistons and stock forged 1957 1958 371 crank that's been lightened and welded on. The Pistons are 60 over. The crank is stamped 3.937, I'm guessing that maybe the stroke but not sure cuz I don't want to spend this thing over much cuz it's full of dust and junk inside the motor. If I use the displacement calculator with that stroke it comes out to 407 cubic inches. The rods don't have any names on them that I can see just forged . The Pistons have a part number of 706 p and they are 60 over and no name on The Underside but did come with a set of jahns Pistons . Here's some pictures more to come

Got a couple more numbers the rods have a printed stamped number of 427540. I measured the Johns Pistons that came with the car and they measure up to 4.1 600 and the part number on those is 981.

 

That's a super cool find! Overall it looks like a pretty good quality build for the day.

 

Some body work done on thc cowl area filling up the scoop hole?

The photo of the cowl area and the information of the injected motor confuses me. The version we saw weekly was a 671 supercharged motor and large scoop on top. Even the photo that you took of a framed old photo shows the large scoop. So, perhaps the Hilborn injected motor was a back up motor to the 671 on top motor.

At any rate, a great find, a great historic project of one of the fastest roadsters at Lion’s Dragstrip during this time period.

 

Yes it definitely had a blower in the old pictures so perhaps when this guy's dad bought it they kept those parts and he put the injection on the motor.i searched around the place for that scoop and other parts but found nothing.this motor never made it into the car and was never fired.
