    Hello,

Ever since this photo came out a long time ago on the HAMB, the color of the Competition Coupe was in question. Was it yellow with red flames as shown on a colorization program?

The Competition Coupe was the Goodyear and Serpa “Pacific Auto Body” coupe with a 296” Flathead. The team bought the car from Harry Duncan. The Pacific Auto Body Shop did their own custom artwork and painting.

So, it looked so real with the color of the sky and grass that was the color I chose for the first drawing.

Since then, with further scrutiny of my photos and movies that I filmed at Lion’s Dragstrip over the years, I found some other proof of the actual color.

But, a real life scene popped up in a very popular photo of the Harrell Engines Modified Roadster at Lion’s Dragstrip between 1959-60. The Pacific Body Shop Coupe and Ford push truck were located in the background of the Harrell Engines’ Red Modified Roadster.

The class lanes were designated lanes for each different class to line up prior to being allowed to run. When we were in the A/Stock class with the 58 Impala, it was right next to the Competition Coupes lane.

There were some early drag racing photos in an old Drag News of the Pacific Body Shop Coupe racing at Santa Ana Dragstrip in 1955, but as scanning old newspapers go, the quality was not the best for a good reproduction photograph.

At Lion’s Dragstrip the records show that they were very good in their class. Fuel Competition Coupe.

As artistic work goes the yellow color looks better, but if the actual photo is a good reproduction, then the coupe is beige or beige/white combo. YRMV

At Lions Dragstrip, as we saw the coupe and push truck from 1957 to 60...
