Hot Rods Vicky Hot Rods - Whacha Got?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by brett4christ, Feb 19, 2019.

  1. Did a search , but didn't see much...

I got to daydreaming today...one thought lead to another. I'm sure I'm NOT the ONLY one...I ended up wondering what a hot rod highboy Model A Vicky would look like. The only one I can think of is @D-Russ "Miss Vicky", (which is an exceptional car...just sayin'!)

I'd love to see what you have or what you've seen.

    Post away....

  2. Got your eye on a Vicky Brett? Is that why you're selling or trading the sedan?

Here's one Jim Barillaro is currently building. It's sitting on a deuce frame like mine. This is the stock roofline – he's chopped it 2-1/2 inches since this pic.

This one is owned by a guy in Japan. It's banger powered, sitting on an A frame, and retains the aprons.
This is the hardest chop I've ever seen on a Vicky.

Here's another one found on the interwebs:

  3. @D-Russ Just daydreaming, I guess. I REALLY want to trade for a coupe, but I saw a Vicky yesterday that's available. Kinda wondering what a Vicky would look like built like @mazboi 's coupe.

  4. There's a ton of wood in a Vicky including the subrails, so choose wisely.

The frame is swept up in the front and has a big kick in the back on that coupe you posted.

  5. Nevermind! It sold! Back to the truck....

I've been searching for examples as well. I bought a rough Vicky body and have been trying to convince myself to like it and maybe build it. So far Im thinking about using the doors and cowl and building a 3 window coupe model A like the Henry prototype.
I haven't seen a single example built before the early sixties. I'd be curious to see if anyone ever built one just post war or in the fifties. I bet not many if any. Ill be watching.

    Haha forget it then.

  8. Oh, I'm still interested in what's been seen before! Just not a priority right now...:D

  9. There were a good number of 32 Vickys built as hot rods from the mid 50s through the early 60s, mostly with fenders, but 30/31 Vickys seem to be few and far between. Here's one example of a chopped fenderless hiboy Vicky under construction from the 50s.
    Screen Shot 2019-02-19 at 9.11.05 PM.png
And here's a very well known fenderless 32 Vicky, but it's channeled, so not a hiboy.

The only two Model As I've found that were built in the early days are the two below. The red one is a gas class car, so it's not a hiboy, but it looks like about 1963 based on the cars surrounding it.

This one is running in what looks like the altered class in maybe about 62.

My next door neighbor in Minneapolis had one back in the late 50's early 60's. So yes they were around.

  11. Here's another A Vicky hot rod I came across on Insta. Not a hiboy, but an early-ish build. The story is a kid recently bought it from the original builder who put it together in the 60s with a 327, T-10, 12 bolt.

Here's one owned by a local guy, I used to see him at most cruise nights I went to, but now that I think about it I haven't seen him for a while, maybe a couple of years. I hope he and the car are both OK.

  14. A couple more fenderless Vickys built in the 50s. The black one is a hiboy, the white one looks channeled:

  24. My friend's '35 Chevy Victoria. Ford Vickies are rare, but at less than 500 built, world wide, this Chevy is rare on a whole 'nother level! When we take it to a show, he never fails to catch a load of shit from vintage Chevy guys for not restoring it back to stock.

    Hello,

The drag racing look was the “go to” style for most hot rods in our neighborhood. It might have something to do with being so close to the 1955 opened Lion’s Dragstrip within a short driving distance from the whole Long Beach area. Sure, there were lowered custom cars, but for the most part, the style of the drag racing influenced hot rods played a huge part of identity. If the go power matched the look, then it was like “icing on the proverbial cake.”

The hot rod custom car guys had their own look and styling cues, big slicks were necessary for the dragstrip, but were a nightmare to drive in any kind of weather, let alone being so close to the ocean and local harbor influence daily. Moisture and slicks are a disaster waiting to happen.

But, despite the abundance of chrome rims on a lot of street hot rods, the true look was to emulate the drag racers with the newly created American Racing Magnesium 5 spoke wheels. Some took those real ones and adapted them to street use. Then, when the American Racing Company specifically made them for street use, the styling took off like a wildfire on the loose. No fake 5 spoke copies for this 32 Vicky sedan.

Norman “Rabbit” Samuels is/was a Long Beach local guy that was involved in all sorts of hot rod/drag racing builds. When he was associated with Reath Automotive race car builds, it just worked out for him. Then finally, he was known for his involvement in the famous “hot rod for sale business” called “Stick City.” It was a place to see a daily car show of many different styles of hot rods, race cars modified for the street and certified used cars.

    Jnaki

This 1932 Vicky sedan was one of his creations and gave off the hot rod/drag racing influence to all those that saw the rake angle and from the rear when going down the street.

One of the coolest looking 32 Vicky sedans, a custom hot rod built for the street and for the numerous car shows that were all over So Cal during this time period.

The sedan just reeked drag racing while on the cruising scene. It looked like it could blast down the Lion’s Dragstrip in the Gas Coupe and Sedan Class with some exciting results. Add in high performance runs down the Cherry Avenue Drags location would just put a topper on all of the hot rod hi-jinks.

Note: All of these years later, Norm “Rabbit” Samuels is still involved with hot rods and custom cars. From Stick City to Street Rods to Highline Motorsports… a hot rod/drag race/custom car history, in So Cal.

A “Rabbit” influence of some sorts…

Loving landseaandairs' brown Vick in post #23. The center pic is just the money shot! I've left 2" of frame exposed on mine so it sets just a tad higher but with a bit more chop. My build thread on here.... "Working on the Vicky body, A build thread with pics"

    Great thread BrettforChrist!
