That is great! We may need to fix the 'ol dripper if the replacement 3rd member doesn't have the same axle splines as in it now. Present axles being Strange units; I'd like to keep them. It really needs positraction.
Got any posi stuff laying around, Bill?

Jack, good idea as it is only a SLIGHT deviation.
Why don't you bring the 36 cabriolet back and take the cabrioster pickup home with you and really do it... just like YOU want it?!
I think your suggested option has a bit too much bling for me but maybe we could pass it over to J A Miller since he prefers a bit more bling?!

Not a lot to report but at least the frame is all one color now. I love firing it up... it is sweet!!
Hopefully we'll get the steering issue addressed within the next week and maybe get started finalizing the mounting of the body.
Now I've gotta go get that ice cream for the rescue squad!

I think it's turning out absolutely terrific just the way it is...but you would have to add some green to REALLY tempt me (and promise to help out with the alimony payments when Bonnie divorces me).

 

Not the best picture but surely one of the last just before it was sold. I share it to show the hood sides that I got from Rootlieb and the 32 bumpers. It went to Ohio the last I heard... maybe with a SBC! Anybody seen it?
Had some great times finding, buying, building, and driving that car. In hind sight; I should have built a bigger garage!

 

This is it! Deep Dish Apple Pie ice cream!! It really does taste like apple pie.


I took these pictures with the cabrioster pickup but I did not use the pickup to deliver the ice cream.
The fine folks at the volunteer rescue squad were quite THANKFUL that I took them the ice cream.

I replaced the ends of the transmission lines that refused to stop leaking.

I also added some insulators where the trans lines seemed to be chafing against the frame. I've still got to add some clamps to all the lines but would like to finish the painting first.
I'll test it later.

 

I was today years old, when I found out @Bandit Billy has never had Crown on ice cream.

 

I'm pleased to report that after a good test drive around the neighborhood that the transmission lines seem to no longer be leaking. I did have to add a little trans fluid to get back into the operating range.
Now to get the rearend to quit leaking!! I'm gonna swap third members using one I have and then visit Bill to get a better handle on why it leaks after a "specialist" supposedly went through it in FL.
Unless, of course, a positraction third member becomes available.
I'm enjoying the little pickup more and more as I drive it.

 

Is it still passable roadster weather down yonder, or are you having to bundle up? We got snow flurries up he in NY.

....You can't be a cupcake, Jack. As long as the air doesn't freeze before it gets to your lungs, it's Roadster weather.

A fellow breakfast bunch pal made me a deal on a 9" third member that might solve my dripping issue!
3.00 gear but won't matter as light as the back of the pickup is... it should spin the tires almost no matter what the ratio!! Now if the splines in it match those on the axles... cross your fingers!

 

I used a southern approach to upholstering my foam seat!
Hand stitched, too!

Actually I was taking it to a young helper that is going to address a few issues for me. Since I was going right by the ice cream parlor, I just had to stop for a picture!

I'm not a true roadster guy like Don but I think driving this morning qualifies me as at least an apprentice true roadster guy! Neither my helper or his Dad could get over how good the paint looked! I'm thinking they both might need their glasses checked!

 

You have roll up windows. Will there be enough headroom, with a top and the low windshield?

I am not a Roadster guy either, but riding with the top and windows down is really nice,,,,,if the weather is nice.

 

You guys might not think that you are Roadster guys, but I really do think that you are. One thing is for sure, both of you are far greater "long distance" runners than I am.........Don.

 

Phil, I think there will be enough headroom... but, like you, I prefer to have the windows and top down when I can.
I'm below the top of the windshield when driving and the top sits on top of windshield and the frame goes up some over the driver's head. I sat in it with the top frame up and I wasn't alarmed about the headroom but didn't really pay much attention once I realized I was looking through the windshield and not over it.
Of course, if I had used the nice bucket seats that came with it; my whole head would have likely been over the windshield!! I'm gonna basically be sitting on the floor but on some great cushions, etc... I hope!!
We'll look at that down the road but we'll need final upholstery to be sure... and that is a ways off!
I think it will work but I'm sure it will more cumbersome to get into with the top up.
With my big feet, I sure like those long doors.

 

Leave the top at home! Top are for sissies . well smart sissies.....

 

Hey Al. You've done great job saving it from "street rod land", and making it a real hot rod. It's got "the look"...you have certainly done it justice

I went by to check on the progress on sorting out the steering. You should not use heim joints, no matter how pretty, in tapered steering arms! Same goes for the steering box link to the steering arm.
Also, generally you don't want any up and down play on the spindle!
And... wait for it... we found oil dripping from a supposedly new Pete and Jake chrome shock absorber!!
Opportunities!! We sure got them!
I did find some spacers to fill the gap on the axle to radius rod.

 

He was very pleased that I kept my word to return one day. We later went for a ride up the winding mountain road and he drove back... with the biggest smile! The little Ford had a Buick... see the pattern?!
Of course it was a little V6 with a two barrel and a built turbo 350 and an early Nova rearend. The transmission was WON by a fellow club member in Delaware a year or two before at The Big One rod run. The great irony is that of all the guys in our club; he was probably one of the most FORD guys! I bought it from him.

This sounds like my A roadster I put together in the mid-80's. Used an early Buick 225 V6, 2 barrel engine, with a Turbo 350 I won at a rod run, and an early Nova rear end, I had traded a set of 49-54 spindles and brakes for.

 

Had some new replacement shocks in my stash; just not chrome.
The new ones will be easier to paint black.
Turns out the tapered holes on the steering arms had been drilled out... looks like with a hand drill.
What we have might be okay once it is all torqued and treated with Loctite... we'll have to watch it to be sure. Also realized the front spindles needed some shims that I also found in my stash. I didn't find any front bearing seals in my stash and the car didn't have any!
Also, somebody forgot that you need a panhard bar with cross steering. We've also got the material to make the new body mounts. I also found some replacement bushings for the front shackles in my stash. They are for a 2" spring and the pickup has a 1.75" spring so they will have to be tweaked a bit.
Anybody got any clever ideas about adding a panhard bar? Show us what 'cha got.
I'll probably end up ordering one but thought I'd ask y'all in the hope that we might find a good alternative that has been tested. The pickup sits on a new 32 frame that was purchased with the body.

 

Steering arms look like they bolt to the spindle. I'd buy? replacements and use a tapered ball joint. Remember the right side arm needs second tapered hole for cross steer. Also need to get arms with the drop to clear everything. The drilled ones are trash. Sorry.
I'm not familiar with how to attach panhard bar to the right side split bone(s).
The left side of panhard hangs from a bracket attached to the bottom of the frame rail. I could get a photo, if needed.

I don't know if there is a bolt on panhard to frame bracket.
