The canister/element style oil filter on the 324 (and other early Olds V-8's) mounts horizontally to a separate mounting boss that's bolted to the engine block. On the bottom of that mounting boss is a drain plug to allow draining the filter housing before changing the element. Can anyone here tell me what the size, type and/or part number is for the replacement gasket or washer that seals this drain plug? I've tried teflon, silicone and every other sealing compound known to man with no luck, and no one shows a replacement for that washer or whatever it is. Thanks!
Take the drain plug to an automotive house or hardware store and get a soft copper washer the correct size to fit the drain plug.
Take a real good look around the housing. "If" it is an NPT plug that is in it it could have been overtightened. It may have a hairline crack and show up more when under pressure. Happened to me on multiple aluminum items!
