Most racers who received a "Swiss Cheese" car is '63 ended up having to weld reenforcement plates in some of the stress areas of the frame as the factory drilled too many holes and weakened them.[/QUOTE]

I had always wondered if they had to do that.

As usual, your a wealth of information. I was 16-17 in 1962, but completely consumed by fast cars. I was always looking in cars to see if it had a floor shift. You could always tell an automatic car from a distance by looking through the windshield to see if the column shift was in the park position.

Short story. When Bob Tidesco was racing his Z-11, he was seeing a girl in Monroeville, PA. After the races at, I think, PID, he stopped to see her. While there, he let a friend of ours, Tyler Churchfield, bring the Z-11 to Monroeville Eat & Park. You can't imagine how surprised we were to see the " Hustler" come in. Tyler and his older brother Brooks went on to buy Ken Tobin's Big Bad Dodge max wedge car and drive it on the street.

Don't think that Arlen had a Dodge. His run with Mopars began with a wedge '63 Plymouth and then 2 1964 Plymouths, a wedge and a Hemi, and then in 1965 he had a Hemi Plymouth Belvedere.

A little earlier there was a question about the S/S class not starting until 1958. Well ... at the 1957 NHRA Nationals in Oklahoma City the S/S class winner was John Zink's red 1957 Pontiac. There was no Top Stock Eliminator at that event though. If memory serves there were tracks running S/S class in 1956 as well. The attached Hot Rod magazine photo is hard to read but the Zink Pontiac S/S win is pictured. By the way, that's the same John Zink who owned Indy 500 cars back then. The S/S '57 in the background of the bellytank car is a photo from the '57 NHRA nationals. 1957 SS-OK City NHRA.jpg 1957-John Zink.jpg

Another question was of Arnie Beswick with a '62 409 ... no photos but there was a mention in Drag News ... 1962-Arnie Beswick-mystery.jpg

About the 2 Bubbletop Chevys I have been trying to get pics of one or both of them for 2 years now nothing so far. In Dean Fait's new book he mentions them and say one was White the other Red he did race them, mostly local I think but when Pontiac finally agreed to give him 62 Catalina's in the same color as his 61 he was back in the Pontiac Family. Seems a silly thing to argue about. Hay Free Cars and Parts I would not care about the color...But who knows?????

Just in case anyone from Pontiac’s upper management is listening: I’m willing to take a Super Duty 421 car in any color! I’ll even drive to the dealership to pick it up!

Can you supply any more information on the ex-Ramsey '62 car photo please Harold Ramsey 1962 BFX.jpg ... and post a flat, less distorted photo? As I recall the car was white (or a very light color) when Ramsey ran it.

Hi Tom, I'm writing a book on Mopar factory drag cars and would love to include some of your beautiful images in the book. I'm hoping to get hold of you if possible.

    Thanks
    Steve

  25. How about a little milwaukee legend Bernie Adams. Bernie ran a Z-11 409 made from over the counter parts. He street drove it and raced it out of his shop on loomis road. He sold the 409 to buy a brand new Chevelle. This car was stock only a few weeks. It was hacked up into a nitro injected funny car. It was campained in the midwest. He beat alot of big names. When this car became obsolete he built a camaro funny car with a Loghe chassis sponsored by Dale Cheverolet. Bernie is alive and doing well. I ran into him last weekend. He gave me these pictures to share. Bernie is a bad ass even in this upper years. 20220804_204114.jpg 20220804_204103.jpg 20220804_204130.jpg 20220804_204141.jpg 20220804_204210.jpg 20220804_204200.jpg

He also built rocket cars. He broke the land speed record with the Blue Flame going around 640 mph. The stories these guys tell are something else. View attachment 5475281

Fords and Mercs were hot on NASCAR tracks in 56-58. Fords were a couple hundred pounds heavier. More fit for high speed oval.
