Projects 1931 Ford 3W Build "Marilyn"

I was able to get both doors opening and latching finally so now that everything is tacked in place from the B pillars forward I’ve now moved onto the rear of the car turning my attention to the trunk/gutter and tulip panel here’s the lower section of the tulip panel patch that my father bent up at his work and I curved to match the old one. I clecoed the gutter to it to start fitting it the the quarters.

 

finally remembered to take a picture of the window opening which is roughly 12 1/2” tall on the Vicky doors. The model a truck I have here measures at 14 7/8” tall but I can’t remember if the truck/sedan doors are taller or just longer. Also decided to finally go at the tulip panel and got it all fit and tacked in place after a lot of massaging the lower patch panel I then measured out the back window chop. I did it at 1 1/2” and that just didn’t look proportional so I settled for roughly 3/4” so I’ll add some back but oh well. Inner trunk skin will be here soon and I’ll finally be able to fit it to my outer skin and begin to tack weld the gutters in place once proper fitment is achieved

 

pushed it outside after I finished up for today and realized all the patches are in place and this is how she will look! Super excited that it’s finally taking shape, been a long time coming!

You have both side upright rear beads on as well?...that means a door trim is on the way soon...

Bobbed frame out front...I missed that even though I probably liked the post where you mentioned or did it......are you squaring it off, capping or are horns going on?

X2. It's a little nicer than a stock A coupe, but hasn't lost it's easily recognizable boxy Model A shape.
And more importantly, by keeping the A hood & grille shell, it doesn't look like it's trying to be a Deuce.

the height you took out of the roof above the door tops is really apparent once I filled the insert. It was a quick fill so it probably looks flatter in the center than it will because I gave zero attention to rendering any crown in the center of the panel

Same here man, gonna probably do a quick maroon paint job with a rattle can for right now and then come back later and give the whole car a nice one.

Yep both B pillars are fabbed however I still need to attach to the subframe.

Yeah never been a huge fan of frame horns without fenders. Had to cut them off. I will curve the stubs and follow the flow of the grille shell!

Thanks man! It’s been a very long road and a lot of learning as I went but I’ve done it all myself, definitely psyched myself out on this car a lot but finally at a point where I’m gaining some serious ground!

her current state is finishing the frame up and fixing my work of the past. my good friend Alden with my coupe chassis fitting the X member in the 32 rails this is what I needed to fix before I could tackle actually securing the body to the chassis. So the body came back off and I decided to get the frame 100% solid beforehand. that’s better! was pushing my 125 mig welder to the max and it just wasn’t enough so I plan on pushing it in the big garage this weekend to use my bosses 220 machine to finish welding the chassis.

X member is fit in the frame. And pedals are mounted to the x member. Motor mounts are close to being done and with the exception of some more frame bracing for peace of mind the body will be going back on soon. Motor in the frame right now is the ex race motor from the junkyard just for mock up but will eventually build a full race Flathead for it!

no close ups as of right now but will get some next time I work on it. Headed to TROG Friday so not much work going to get done for this weekend but I’m sure I’ll be itching to really hammer down after! Also picking up a 26-27 roadster body and another Flathead. Might build it but not 100% sure yet either way it will be after the coupe is driving before I start anything else

 

lots of work into the frame. Finally got it all square and braced up. Need to dress a couple welds on top of the frame rails and weld in motor mounts but other than that I believe the frame is done. Made some hairpin mounts from some square tubing and dressed up the motor mounts a little. A buddy of mine had a front clip of a F1 so he was nice enough to lop off 2 18” sections of frame and I was able to clean them up remove all the brackets and use them as the center X member supports. Went to the original location on the X member. Cut the rails and folded the frame in on itself and cupped the X member and slid the other end inside the rails. I did solid weld everything on this frame since it was cut up into so many pieces. I don’t want to box it (I’m just not a fan of how it looks) however I do believe this to be more than stout enough. The 1/4” plate I welded into the lower portion of the X was night and day alone as far as structural integrity goes. Could be too safe so I added those outer runners as well. Was going to paint the inside but I think I will wait and throw the body back on this weekend and start back on finishing the B pillars and work on body mounts.

For those who think there are no kids getting into our hobby, you haven't been to New England. The traditional hot rod scene here is strong with lots of "kids", especially at the English compound.

body is back on cut new wood for the B pillars and got the lower B pillar feet made and installed (forgot to take pics of them welded in place, I bolted through the the wood to the angle iron with carriage bolts to secure the body rather than bolting to the subframe. after the b pillars were done I started in steering cause it’s a huge pain in the ass to push in the snow by myself to get to the main garage and stopping to adjust the wheels was getting old quick. due to how pinched my frame is I had no choice than to mount my steering box on top of the frame rails. Also with the car being as low as it was I didn’t want a huge angle on the drag link so this suited my needs. Rather than cutting the F1 steering boxes webbing off I decided to dent in the frame rail so I used a torch and my BFH and clearenced it. I sleeved the drag link and spot welded in 4 locations then I welded 1/4” plate to the steering box for the mounts and used more 1/4” plate to make new reinforcements to the modified snout of the box I will go back and dress up the welds when I paint it. Next up was the column drop…this puzzled me for a few hours I knew what I wanted but couldn’t exactly figure out how to achieve it. I hated cutting the nice OG column drop up but “Hotrod” is the game so I cut the ears off and used more plate to fab up a new extended drop onto the keyed/locking 40 ford column. I then extended the stiffener plate on the bottom of the gas tank (hopefully that doesn’t give me trouble later on) in which the new column drop bolts to through the sides of the mount for a more clean appearance from the seat. I shortened the steering shaft and sleeved it as well as spot welds through and cut the column down to match, threw on my Merc steering wheel I’ll be running and made vroom noises for a few minutes then went back to work. I finally got off my ass on the quarter window patches and welded the driver side up and smoothed up enough for primer. A couple more spots I need to address but I’m pleased with how it came out. I cut the lower quarter patch loose to fix the F’d up angle and my welder shit the bed so I’ll get back to it this weekend. Thanks for reading and stopping by to check up on the coupe. I’ve been trying my damndest to convince myself not to chop it…I feel I may have to with as tall as it looks after I got the window filled in and primed all one color…it will only go 2 more inches and I’m not chopping it right now. I will be moving in with metal repair and getting it running for the race next year if I have time before I’ll chop it.
