Okay i cant figure out how to search for this and need some help. I picked up a new seat for my 47, i was told they thought it was out of a 40 ford. It has the rope handles on the backs of the seats. My 53 olds 98 had the same ropes. My question is, what are they called? Also how and where do i get them/make them? Any and all help is appreciated 20211104_090859.jpg 20211104_090910.jpg

They were originally intended to hold a folded lap robe. Lap robes were used back in the day when car heaters were marginal at best. Over the years manufactures continued to fit them to the back of the front seats even though not needed.

That doesn’t look like a ‘40 Ford seat either

    Those are “Oh Shit” Ropes.

  7. The seat looks suspiciously G.M. as in Oldsmobile.

I thought they were so the people that sat in the back seat had something to grab to pull themselves out of the seat when they wanted to get out of the car.

My 46 Oldsmobile front seat pull cord or robe / escutcheon were exactly the same. Fabric and foam over an inner wire core. The cord is secured (Hooks) onto seat frame through those escutcheon cover plates. I purchased repo. cords from now defunct Hampton Coach (GM arm of Le Baron Bonney) for my 46 Oldsmobile. Could I suggest a reputable trim supplier / restoration business that services GM vehicles. My GM trim book with detailed illustrations is packed away somewhere. This is from 1946 Fisher body manual

Could eliminate them when upholstering, especially if the seat is not original to the car.

  16. .......Best answer right there. If you have your heart set on keeping them and you're getting the entire interior re-done, just tell the stitcher to order up a few extra feet of windlace and use that. Likely not quite as thick as the original robe cord, but hey, it will match the windlace and who's gonna actually use them anyway!
