I spent a few days finishing up the welds from the chop and had to stop because I was starting to "chase" tiny shrinks and warps....you know the ones you can't really see but can feel. Anyway I think I was just making more work for myself that was not going to be seen after paint so I just quit.
I have been sealing up the floor because if the stars align I will be taking this to Bonneville. Maybe not this year but for sure 2022 . I can really appreciate the courage that some guys have taking their hotrods in bare metal to the salt. I don't want to have to redo everything so I'm sealing as much as I can to prevent salt invasion. Epoxy primer, urethane seam sealer , paintable bedliner and catalyzed Tremclad (Rustoleum).
    I also made a cover for the master cylinder with a quarter turn latch. 20210226_100907.jpg 20210226_105119.jpg 20210226_105147.jpg 20210226_105200.jpg 20210226_110413.jpg 20210226_110427.jpg 20210226_121133.jpg

  4. Phenomenal work. One question though, as it’s called “General “ mischief, is that a regulation hair cut?

I had a quick look at the US Marines grooming regulations and it said something about 3 inches , so I chopped the General 3 inches . I guess that means it's within the guidelines.

I've been trying to come up with a different yet traditional looking headlight stand. I'm not going to use the fenders so the fender braces are going to be wasted. One was already broken anyway so it was an opportunity to try something. I cut them off and machined some "cups" for the headlight studs. Welded and blended them with my belt sander.I think they will look good. A little lower and a little further apart. It's all about the look , if they don't look right they aren't. I really won't know until it's all together with wheels and paint. 20210313_172415.jpg 20210313_172329.jpg 20210313_172318.jpg 20210313_172222.jpg

Will the headlights clear the tires when steered lock to lock?

Neat idea Jeff. You could attach them on the side of the frame too.

Best guesses and measurements say they should......BUT I will only really know when it's all together

Yeah , I would just have to clock the lenses a quarter turn. Good idea!

I'm touched by your concern for my safety.....here's my traditional take on a modern safety item 20210330_140156.jpg 20210330_140203.jpg

It's been nice enough to get the shop up to temp and do a little painting. I used Tremclad (Rustoleum) gloss black for the wheels , axle , radius rods and ladder bars and semi gloss black for the frame. I used a generic acrylic enamel gloss hardener in both and after 2 days they are rock hard dry. I'll order the tires soon and maybe I'll be able to get the chassis together before summer. 20210403_102722.jpg 20210403_102709.jpg 20210403_102555.jpg 20210403_102518.jpg 20210403_102452.jpg

The DHL guy dropped some new shoes off yesterday and I had to show em off . Coker Firestone blackwall 700-16 and 550-16. The neighbour let me use his tire machine to mount them (good neighbor). So the General put on his new shoes and I had to set the motor in place just cause.
It seems like a lot of progress but now I have to do bodywork....UGH! Oh well , gotta get done sometime. 20210424_094224.jpg 20210424_094237.jpg 20210424_100707.jpg 20210424_100720.jpg 20210424_100732.jpg

Because I have to get an inspection to get this registered and licensed I need a proper exhaust. The inspection manual is very clear about no cutouts or exhaust in front of the passenger compartment. I'm going to run two pipes out the back but I have to wait till the body is on to do the tailpipes and over the axle pipes. I made my own mufflers by the way. I know some guys will say " why waste your time when you can buy them" , they are made from stuff in my junk pile so they cost nothing. One more little checkmark on the list of things to do.

Great build, silly question, what is the trans? Did it bolt right to the stock trans?

  24. Sure looks like a T5 and stock bell, makes me wonder also since I have the same parts floating around the shop

It's a T5 from an S-10 and the bellhousing is from a 235. I had to make a mount for the clutch slave cylinder. If I could find a bell from a 60 truck 235 the slave mount is built in and on the passenger side instead of the drivers side.

So , when you're in a big city walking across a bridge sometimes there is a grate or screen that's supposed to keep suicidal people from jumping off. Not sure if they work or not but the thought is there.
I've never liked the name "suicide" front end. It kind of implies that the driver has a death wish or something. There have been a couple of guys living rent free in my head for a while , they've been the ones saying "oooh I don't like the look of that" ...." Yer gonna dig those frame ends straight into the dirt if yer spring breaks"
I mostly ignore the voices but I'm not suicidal so here is my take on a multipurpose SPD , headlight mount , rad mount.
I made the SPD out of 1/2 X 2-1/2 steel and bolted it through the top of the frame with 3/8ths bolts. I drilled and tapped the plates for 5/16 bolts for the headlights and rad mounts. The SPD should be the last resort if my shock mounts fail. Maybe overthinking things but I needed an answer for the rad and headlights and I think the rolling bones guys have an axle catcher on the front of their frames for the same reason. 20211029_114041.jpg 20211029_113956.jpg 20211029_113843.jpg 20211029_113833.jpg 20211029_113756.jpg 20211029_113736.jpg

  27. How about a pic showing how the spring mounts to the bones? Looks clean from the front.

I found a piece of perforated metal and cut it to fit in the shell. It has a galvanized finish
I'm still deciding whether or not to paint the insert black. 20211031_112414.jpg

I'd go black to match axle.
