Looking for someone who could rebuild my Buick 215. Looking for someone on the west coast preferably near Sacramento. Having a hard time finding someone local. Any information is appreciated
Man, 1 post in 9 years is some kind of lurking! Have you tried all the standard engine builders and they've turned you down? I'm not sure why rebuilding a 215 is any more difficult than other engines except maybe familiarity. Are you wanting a stock rebuild or an upgrade?
What can I say, I'm very good with the search function. I've only checked a couple of places that were recommended to me. Both told me they did not rebuild this engine. Looking for a stockish rebuild with a cam. Just looking for a recommendation rather than taking to a random builder.
Yeah, it should be no big deal for a respected shop to do that work. Nothing secret or magical in that engine. Just ask one question - "how will you clean the aluminum parts ?" If they something about a hot tank...RUN, do not leave anything with them. Mike
You might try the MG V8 group. A lot of us used the Buick and Rover 215's years ago. My builder is in Kansas City so that wouldn't help.
Dave at BMS Machine Services in San Bernardino does just about everything from flatheads to diesels to Bonneville engines. He did an excellent job on my 8ba flathead. He is a ways from you but if he can do it and you can't find anyone closer it might be worth the trip. 1904 Riverview Dr # 101, San Bernardino, CA 92408 (909) 799-7770 Or what about Tim McMaster (@mctim64 in the Fresno area? Much closer and he's an English car guy as well so he may be versed in the aluminum block 215's. http://yblockguy.com/
Can't remember the date but when GM came out with the 215 inch Buick (and Olds) Hot Rod Magazine did a pretty comprehensive article on building these engines. Not today's technology maybe, but lots of good info. You should be able to find this (especially since you're good with the search function) and it would be worth your while to know as much as you can find out. And as has already been said here, it's an aluminum motor, not a rocket science project.
Have you checked Del's Auto Parts & Machine on Wooley Way in Sac(i've used him with excellent results), or Rex Hutchison's Racing Engines on Auburn blvd in Sac(another impressive & well equipped shop)? Those are two that I would check with! They aren't cheap, but "Good" never is...
Try Baechler Machine in San Andreas, Ca. Willie Baechler specializes in older/unusual engines. He did my '56 Olds rocket and my buddy's '41 Ford flathead more recently. 730 Industrial Way, San Andreas, Ca. 95249 (209) 754-4646
