Can anybody identify these wheels? They are 15 x 7 with no name but numbers on the back are PH 1551 and Ph 852. They are magnesium. Bought an older built 55 Chevy gasser with these wheels on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The alum slots*/ Indy style looking*rims started showing up in car mags in early 1960s. I loved Indy 500,anything Indy 500 looked fast !!!! So very hotrod ,I had a lust right-a-way for slots, but really could not aford them new, took me some time too get some{ Thanks too my good buddy,Eddie Silva helped find used set. RIP.} A few brands did kind of copy each other, see what's selling good an make it game. Still my fav. style ! with Chrome Rev. with beanies #2. I liked a lot of stuff that cost too much $ for me !
May we have a picture of the back sides, please. Spoke shape can tell a tale. Have you put a drop of white vinegar on an unobtrusive spot on the back side and seen how it reacts?
Magnesium wheels usually had a dual bolt patter, and not unilug. If the wheels still look like the pics, they're aluminum.
Sure looks like the lug holes are elongated, maybe to fit 4 1/2 and 4 3/4 lug pattern? Like @gimpyshotrods said let’s see a picture of the back side, they could be cast to fit uni-lug washers. I have no doubt the wheels are aluminum.
plain cheap aluminum slots, I made a killing dealing in these 15 years ago, prices are still high for skinnys
I need to clean them up when I have a chance. There are some surface irregularities from the previous owner. A little DA work will fix that..
These are 4.5" generic front, and 7" Fenton rear. Fenton wheels, like most of the name brands, have the name cast into the back side. The generic ones don't.
I will take a picture of the back side tomorrow. I will ut the vinegar on it. What is the reasoning behid the vinegar?
If you put a drop of white vinegar on the wheel, and it does nothing, they are made of aluminum. If it fizzes like carbonated soda, the are made of magnesium. If it does, wash it off thoroughly.
when my folks finally let me go out with the local guys in a '61 falcon, we crested a hill to see the fire dept. all standing back while a VW bus had its mag engine fully engulfed in flames... i wondered why they didn't hose it down... dad set me straight on that one...
they don't look like they have the recess for the caliper on disc brakes, so they might be from the 1960s. Other than that, yes, they're generic aluminum slot wheels. It's likely that the lug nut holes were filed out to fit a different bolt pattern, which reduces the value somewhat.
Still pretty cool wheels, lot of people would love to have them. If you hate them, send em to me, I'll figure out something to do with them
When you add pics to your first post later most folks will miss them. I already looked at this thread so I hit the red dot and immediately go my first unread post. Only first time viewers will see them for the most part Generic Aluminum Slots
