    Hello,

Despite the pandemic still going on all over the USA, there is a local car show that draws a ton of people to the normally quiet Avenida Del Mar in San Clemente. The artwork that most see is/was done by Meghann Nelsen.

Her love of art has played well with old hot rods, woody wagons and anything automotive. One of the first public mural art paintings on the intersection computer boxes as part of the local beautification scene.

The local car show was held in early September and the poster commemorating the event was done by Meghann Nelsen.

Art Mortimer California Heights next to Bixby Knolls

    Hello,

California Heights is/was a very popular area to live back when we were teenagers. As we all got to the local high school, I met so many people from this particular area of Bixby Knolls. Well, it was part of Bixby Knolls as we knew of it. The southern end location, close to Signal Hill, but still a part of the Bixby Knolls proper.

But, those that live there would like to be separated from the connotation of the fancy homes and businesses of “Bixby Knolls.” This area was about two miles away from the famed Cherry Avenue Drags as we called it. The homes were smaller, but great designs for an older part of the community.

To us, and most everyone we knew, it was the Southern end of Bixby Knolls as a whole area that was our cruising grounds. If you mentioned any of the streets, some one would say “oh yeah, Bixby Knolls.” As a final capper, the hot rod/drag race guys that lived and raced on Cherry Avenue, attended Friday/Saturday nights at Grissinger’s and Ken’s Burger Drive In places, all considered it Bixby Knolls.

A half mile North of the red star is the famed “Cherry Avenue” drags.

Bixby Knolls is known as the beginning of the Cacklefest movement with major street closures for car shows and of course, the famous early Cacklefest displays of the fabulous So Cal drag racers firing up their motors. The Carson St. and Atlantic Avenue intersection was just a few blocks north of Bixby Road. (set up area near Bixby Rd./Atlantic Ave. on the drawing map)
upload_2021-10-9_4-41-28.png "The award, presented by Councilwoman Rae Gabelich, carries the name of Mr. Gabelich, known as the "Rocketman" for setting the world land speed record on Oct. 23, 1970 on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with an average speed of 622.407 mph using his rocket-powered "Blue Flame." Mr. Gabelich lived most of his life in the Bixby Knolls area and began his racing career at Lions Drag Strip in the 1950s."
    upload_2021-10-9_4-49-9.png
“The event was staged, through the efforts of Rae Gabelich, a Long Beach city councilwoman and whirlwind of energy.”
    upload_2021-10-9_4-49-44.png
“Thanks to superb planning and coordination by Bill Pitts, there were eleven of the best “Cacklecars” (restored or recreated dragsters) in SoCal and they all put on a great show. Under sunny and very hot California skies thousands of spectators saw each car fire up three times during the afternoon. When all was said and done the smell of nitro lingered in the air and everyone was wearing a huge smile.” WDIFL

But, to be politically correct, the Mid to Southern area in question is listed as California Heights.

    Hello,

How can good old Ed Iskenderian be wrong with his hot rod and the official classic Helms Bakery Truck in the same neighborhood. They were icons in their time and we all were affected by one or the other in our own history in So Cal.

“First opening its doors in 1931, family-owned and operated Helms Bakery supplied local residents with its fresh-baked bread delivered “Daily at Your Door” for over four decades. While no longer in the business of baked goods, the Helms Bakery building remains a cherished local landmark, recognized for its architectural significance.”

If anyone is ever in Culver City, CA visiting the historic Helms Bakery Building complex, this Helms Bakery Truck art work is across the busy Washington Blvd. It is part of the Beacon Laundry Building complex.

The art work is disguised quite well and if anyone is walking around the historic district, you will see it. If you are driving by, the space goes by quite fast. But, it is there in the historic district complex.

You will have to wait until the pandemic is over to actually visit in person, just to be safe.

    Southeast San Diego Logan Ave.

    Hello,

While spending our San Diego sailing vacations for the past 6 years, we had plenty of time to travel all over the greater San Diego Harbor, Bay, and ocean area. Once the sailing was finished for the day, we had time to wander all over San Diego city streets down to the border. From the tall shade offered by the downtown building district, to the arty shoreline businesses, it was a different way to look at a crowded metropolis.

One of our trips was to go south to the Border. On the way back, we stopped at the Logan Avenue Community near the I-5 cross over bridge and explored the local scene. Once finished with our explorations, we crossed the tall bridge to Coronado Island and back to the downtown shoreline and the harbor slips.

It is amazing that such a large city can have such diversity and things to do in every section of the city from surf spots along the ocean to the cool neighborhood vibes and restaurants. “It takes a community” and this big city has it in droves.

    Jnaki

The artwork may or may not be to everyone’s liking, but it shows a creativity and the differences in art for art’s sake.

    Hello,

The Pacific Beach area is a nice coastal town area for visitors and residents. It has the feel of a small 60s town attached to the big metropolitan city area of San Diego. It only takes a few minutes from the downtown area and harbor to reach the Pacific Beach area. It is a window to the large Mission Bay aquatic area for vacationers and locals with boat access to the ocean or calm waters of Mission Bay.

While driving away from the beach and cool pier location, the mural stands out as if the scene was played out in the 60s and fits the location of the town.

Kathleen King, whose 1988 mural was painted from a 1943 photo of Garnet Avenue, looking West toward Crystal Pier. Located on Cass Street in the Pacific Beach area near the Crystal Pier.

Crystal Pier is the only live aboard facilities on any pier on the Westcoast of the USA. Back when we were little, our dad took us there because he loved pier fishing, deep sea fishing and casting his line from the miles of sandy shoreline. The plus was the rental unit was right on the pier and within several minutes, he had access to miles of rocky outcroppings and white sand beaches for surf fishing. He surf fished, our mom stayed under the umbrella, while, the two young brothers ran all over the sand and shallow waters.
