Folks Of Interest Broken piece off 62 cadillac 390.is it useless?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by iwanaflattie, Oct 21, 2021.

  1. Hey guys.
Got in a jam over the 390 cadillac I had.
    I sold it.
I never checked the block that well, didn't check internals.
I just made sure it turned and that the oil was not milky and told the buyer just that..
Now buyer says block is broken and if I wana make it right,I gotta fork 500.

I'm not sure what to do.
I don't want my rep in the gutter because a bad deal.
I should've sold it locally where I could just get his money back and my engine back but.lesson learned.
    What's the boards opinion?

I think you were upfront with him.
what does he mean by broken block? is the broken block visible outside?

  3. "You didn't tell me the block was broken" he said, and send the picture above...all I see is the piece off the trans mount flange missing.

Shipping boo boo? I'd split the cost and be done with it.

$500.00 seems a little steep for a core 390 , did you ship it to him , sum ting wong

  6. I am real honest when I say I didn't look at the blocks condition,I didn't see any oil seeping through or rust streaks...
I should've looked at it real good but I didn't.
When it was offered to me I just took it because I knew it was cool and the price was right.
    I never checked the internals...
If he asked me to take several pics or if he had me look at it real well I would've.
I don't need this drama In my life.
He's also a well known engine builder out of Ohio.
He arranged shipping and paid for it.
I sold him the 390 with the 2x6 modified olds intake and the carbs for 1k..
    Now this

Ok so 500 is splitting the cost then. If he's happy with that and it makes you sleep better? Only you can truly decide? For me, stuff happen's to the best of us. It's how we cope with it that really matters.

  8. That looks like the bottom drivers-side bellhousing bolt is gone. Arguably one of the most-stressed ones, and it looks like it's been gone for a while judging by the dirt/rust at the break so it doesn't look like a shipping issue. I certainly wouldn't use it...

While it sounds like neither of you did due diligence during the sale, you're going to have to eat this one unless you can furnish another rebuildable block... IMO. You could argue about if the core was 1/2 of the sale price, but that will leave a bad taste. Pay up, lick your wounds and move on if you value your reputation.

  13. All I can say is that if you had the missing piece it would be fixable.

I guess it would depend on how much of the 1k selling price was attributed to the 6x2 intake and carbs,if the price were divided evenly between the engine and the 6x2 setup, then I guess $500 would be reasonable but if it was 250 for the engine and 750 for the 6x2 setup then that would be a different matter. As far as shipping costs, with you refunding the purchase price he should be able recoup most of the shipping costs by stripping all the usable parts off the engine,I'm assuming its not being shipped back to you.If he feels his time is too valuable for that, then he shouldn't be buying stuff sight unseen no questions asked.

You should of inspected it before asking that much. Give him the full amount minus the manifold and carbs. as he is out shipping to. Like you say ,your rep.

    Tough call.
Picture clearly shows it was broken when the deal was made.
Any used block before tear down and thorough inspection is a crap shoot.
Have the whole thing sent back, pay shipping and refund.

I would say the intake and carbs would be the bulk of that 1k. Definitely not half.

  22. No...he seen other pics and said "I'll take it."we spoke on the phone and talked about how I got it and if it spins and I mentioned that the oil wasn't milky..
I know I made a mistake not checking it throughly before selling it but I assumed a 300 core was a fair price just to get it off my garage and the intake was the main reason people would be interested

Tuff call on reputation. Was it the 390 buyer was after or the goody's up top?

  27. At $1K plus shipping cost, a $500 refund isn't doing you any favors but it's not particularly out of line either IMO. Again, what's your reputation worth to you?
