I'm freshening up the SBF for the '54. The cylinders are within spec so I'm just going with a ball hone to get crosshatch. I'm ordering a re-ring kit and am wondering if its best to go with moly rings....or? I'm just looking for the best seal possible. The motor will be a bone stock street cruiser backed by an AOD. Thoughts?
This is the kit I'm ordering............

I've done fine with plain cast iron rings on budget overhauls.

Is there an advantage to moly? It's only an $11 upgrade.

  5. On a brush hone rebuild, i have always been taught to use cast rings. Will work better when it comes to seating if your cylinders aren't exactly perfect.

Cast rings for a ball hone job. Moly for an overbore.

yup, moly ring seal a good, round, smooth bore well, and last a long time. Plain cast rings wear a bit faster, and will seat on a not-so-round bore.

  12. Yup, I'd use cast iron rings. I've had great results using them on a re-ring.

This got me thinking that we really are old throwbacks to the past. Back when, magazines like Hot Rod would run ads for piston rings. Can you even imagine going to a commercial garage today and getting a ring job?

In 1965 I was doing 2 8cyl ring&valve in the car in a 6 day week and take home around $175. The only things we sent out were cracked heads and pin fit.
