Here's a great trick for running 16" steel rims on your rod with a Ford 4.5 bolt pattern. I used a set of 1940 Dodge 16' rims on my old Sedan Delivery when I first built it. 30's-40's Mopar rims use a 4.5 bolt pattern same as later model Ford 8', 9' rears & disc brake kits, and bolt right up. The Mopar rims use "clips" to hold the hubcaps on, so I simply cut the guts out of the '40 Mopar and '48 Ford hubcaps and mounted the Mopar guts into the Ford caps so they would attach to the Mopar clips.

Thanks, I was really tripping out with this challenge...as alluded you have a great base for an incredible Custom with a plethora of Suitable Wheelcovers to choose from and don't know where your leaning tire wise but Champions are a look that's hard to beat but if you choose to go Radial those Auburn's or Coker also has a Bias look ww if available in an applicable sizes...

@tb33anda3rd has a Bias Look Radial on his Hotrod Coupe that is a relatively new one on the market but does it come in a size that works...

It's all dollars too, so I look forward to seeing where you take this...I do know you appreciate the Cruiser element of the Hobby based on previous vehicles you owned or looked at...and Family Sedans can certainly look the part without a doubt...

@VANDENPLAS , Here's a "build theme" that I have used on a coupe of rods, that would work really well for your Merc.

What would a "$75 a week job, average joe" kind of guy do in the '50s-'60s to personalize/customize his car?

He would detail the hell out of it...and accessorize it. No de-chroming (that would require a re-paint) but instead, ADD more chrome. Warshawsky and JC Whitney catalogs were packed with tons of (period correct) add ons:cool:.

Admittedly, I may have gone a little overboard on this one;).

Thanks Jack...yes you could shiny it up but this Car doesn't really have a ton of trim and chrome to remove...and yes the door handles and flushing or relocation of the gas filler and mirror removal would necessitate some re-engineering with minor bodywork and repaint but perhaps it could be done and blown in as opposed to a full repaint...

There's no rust so he's already ahead of the game in many ways...

I'm curious of Van's thoughts after the barrage of things to consider...

...I'm happy for my part in giving you options...See you at the Jalopy Jam Up when it returns...;)

So to achieve this stance in a vintage way is it blocks and a dropped axle?

So Van have you ever been in or driven something so old? They're narrow body but certainly much roomier than your average Model A...

Dang, I just looked at the pic of the wheel in the pic. I’ve a set of those same wheels and plan on doing what Blowby did. Mine were off a 90’s (I think ) Jeep. Going to have to pull them out of a trailer out back and see if I can drill them for clips and run some baby moons.
If it works out will be an inexpensive way to have a “plain” looking chrome wheel.
Maybe by the time they start to drip rust from drilling them, I’ll crack open the wallet for real wheels…maybe.
