I just ordered a harmonic balancer from Summit. Shipping date is 12/20/21. I guess that's if I'm lucky. I'm starting to wonder how bad things will get before it gets better. How many of our specialist vendors are going to disappear? Get parts while we still can.

I guess the thing that made me wonder was that Edelbrock was doing most all of it's work in house, soI figured it was more of a staffing issue.

Staffing is a huge issue for everyone too… But, from what I understand, Edelbrock is having big issues with raw materials as well.

Maybe we can all go back to the roots of hot rodding, Shop at junkyards, Make our own parts, adapt parts from other cars... the sky is the limit

Its not just hot rod and or other car parts that are in short supply. In the last
week I was unable to get milk, and other dairy products along with eggs and
cottage cheese at the local large chain grocery I use. No spray paint at the usual
places. Today I could not get fence boards from a fence supply outfit. As for shopping
junk yards for stuff, that as well can be futile. Mostly late model stuff around here.
Could not get a simple I phone cord from best buy. Its frustrating. Luckily I
have enough hot rod stuff parts on hand to keep my project going for the time being.
. To day I successfully competed with a scrapper for some discarded bed frame rails.
I managed to get about 30' of 1 1/4" x 1/8" angle iron to use for various fabrication needs.
Last week I paid 11$ for 4' of the same material new from The home depot. Its getting
crazy in America. Scary to me.

Maybe I am spoiled, 4 or 5 large junkyards within 1-2 hr drive from here that have large amounts of 40's-70's cars....

  10. You are lucky, most of the yards with old stuff near me have disappeared and the few remaining are picked over.

  11. :rolleyes::D Yeah your spoiled !!!

I got a customer that smelts and refines scrap aluminum. They have been stupidly busy through COVID selling all over the USA , Mexico and South America !!!

owner says “ make hay while the sunshine’s as tomorrow ain’t promised to no one !!”

Edelbrock makes a lot of stuff for the “tuner “ market as well. My guess is with the lack of raw materials amd foundry they might be focusing on “ fast moving “ items to keep money coming in.
Sucks but something else to consider.

Been waiting for a heater core since March ship date September. Well now they don’t even have a date theme to go to plan B.
My buddy had a 2x4 out of a early corvette it’s a nice aluminum intake for 300 bucks or so. Plus old speed equipment is just cool

Same around here. The last time scrap went sky high, the old yards cleaned up and closed. Plus most of the old guys that had smaller yards have died off and their heirs called in the scrappers as well. I only know of one yard within 30 miles of me, and it’s late model stuff and they won’t let you on the yard, you call and they pull the parts you want. Heck, there was a newer u pull type yard about 45 miles from me that only stayed open about a year, no business I guess. I went a few times and got some stuff for my late model drivers and got my power steering stuff I put on the Lincoln.

I haul out of a roofing shingle plant daily. So far, they haven’t had any problems with raw materials or labor. They had a layoff last year when lots of places were shutting down, but they never closed. They didn’t call anybody back that they laid off though, instead replacing them with temporary help from an agency. Just a back door way to cheaper labor.

The problem in my area is machine shop type work. Have to go out of county to find anybody that can machine blocks and heads or press bearings. No driveshaft shops, no muffler shops. I have got to have my driveshaft retubed, no one in the county can do it. I located a truck driveline shop that I hear can do it, so I’m going to check with them when I can, but they’re 50 miles away. Sometimes it sux to live out in the country...

I quit jacking w/ old stuff in the '90s when everything went to the crushers here. Lucky to find one great old yard 1 hour away then. No Internet, 2 month wait on the latest Hemming's phonebook. We now have it better than ever with International searches through sites like the classifieds here on the HAMB. The hunt is the fun part of this hobby to me, not the finished product. Finding that very rare part is like panning a big gold nugget out of the creek :)

  16. It’s not just Hot Rod stuff that’s hard to come by. I’ve got an O/T late model one ton wrecker at work that’s waiting on a ball joint, since June. It’s too new for aftermarket and every time the ship date comes within a day or so, Chrysler yanks the ship date out another two weeks. We have been told that when the big three run out of certain high traffic parts, they buy up all of the available aftermarket supplies and keep them for themselves or rebox and resell them. We have also come across parts that there might only be 10, for example, in the country and the dealers who have them refuse to sell them. These dealers also refuse to release these parts to other dealers. I also have two large trucks waiting on ECM’s for the same reasons.

I had to wait a month for a AC line for my Freightliner. It was a specific part that only fit that model, there were none in the US. Parts guy told me when mine came in, suddenly they were everywhere, his main warehouse had 35 of them. Must have gotten a truckload at one time. And it was marked Made in USA, so it wasn’t a boat issue, just slow shipping I guess.

The only junkyards we have around here are the big chain yards, LQK etc. Those are great if you need a dash out of a 2009 Nissan Sentra. Not so much for hot rods.

I went to one of my old hunting grounds a while back and they were down to nothing. They were talking about selling out to the city for part of a parks system.

    I hear ya Jeff.

We do our own bodywork/paint, motors, suspension, wiring and now we are attempting upholstery.

We always did it because we were poor. Now, we do it because I can’t find people willing to do the work in a timely matter for a decent price.

It was just a few years back that aluminum processors were shutting
down in the U.S. because of the tremendous glut of imported cheap
chinese aluminum ingots. I am no economist, and dont understand how things
can change so dramatically so quickly. I have opinions, but would be
way off subject and deleted forthwith.

Same here, Root. Right now, the situation is poor. Hunting season is on and you don't need a license :D
