Technical LICENSE PLATE LIGHTS

Not traditional, but I like the idea of a 3rd brake light.

When we put in a third red taillight lens to now make 6 rear facing red lights on the 1958 Black Impala, it looked rather cool. They all lit up when we put on the brakes and that gave the rear following cars plenty of brake lights for no rear end collisions.

But, we had to jury rig a couple of small white lights to the back up light wire so, it would remain legal. Nothing worse than to be stopped for illegal lights anywhere. Some hot rod oriented policeman or CHP would have done that, just to show how much power they had over us.

The two small lights were placed below the plate and were angled rearward/downward to show off the backup area, when engaged. It was not custom, but did the intended job. It was never questioned as being illegal, but definitely, was not stock.

If I had drilled two small bulb holes next to the lower edge of the license plate, that would have been sufficient and not noticeable. YRMV

 

LED license plate bolts, I prefer black to chrome. The frame contains a backup camera (I can't see squat out of the back window).

I am seriously digging Joey Ukrop's Gaz license plate light in the San Francisco Roadster build thread. I might have to borrow that one for mine!

This is the traditional style one used most often on the west coast in the 50's now being reproduced sa shown.

 

49-50 Pontiac/Chev. license plate light turned 90 degrees, works well and suits the era of my car.

Correct. Standoff and light assembly (Lucas) from a '61-69 Austin Healey Sprite. Nice little glass/chrome lamp, bright with 2 bulbs on some.

LIGHTNING BOLTS Work great but---A great PAIN in the ass when you have to change plates (or in Indiana, when you have to UPGRADE your current plate) because you have to dewire/rewire the wiring every time.

 

Was thinking maybe something could be made from these.

Yes, - I have also thought of doing that, (top one), as they are stainless and have a really nice shape to them.

 

Stumbled across this one at a swap meet a couple of months ago. Bracket was sprung and bent up but straightened out with some persuasion....needs paint now. Shell is in great shape.

 

Another Lucas lamp (L766) I always liked- same width as the plate, two lights for the plate and a reverse lamp facing backwards. It has a variant with no reverse lamp too.
