I need help to identify this BBC engine that I got with my old modified stock car it was the spare engine . The heads are aluminum and are stamped Don's Porting Service Albany , N.Y. 125.5 cc head #3946074 . The block serial # is T0521 LS the casing # 3963512 . Rocker arms are stainless and the cam is a Isky solid roller and compression is 12.1 also there is a big fitting in block above oil filter . Any help would be appreciated . I'll add a few photos .
Internet says that probably a 427 (1969) or 454 block . I would think if it were a 427 it may. have some value ....@squirrel ??
Sorry I'm 81 and didn't word it right , I need help to identify what year and model does it apply to ?
That's a killer engine....LS is 1969 full size car 425 hp 427, with TH400 transmission. I have those heads on my Chevy II, they're pretty good heads. The casting date is on the bottom, kind of hard to see, but it would be neat to know if they're from the same time as the engine.
Don't be sorry for being 81... especially if it's miles an hour and at your age I wouldn't be hitting the corners that fast Sounds like you're on to something
It's an Impala 427 425 horse as noted above. Super rare engine. I wonder if they had an L89 aluminum head option...didn't see an engine code for one. With that kind of compression and these heads I'd be more inclined to think someone went and found some of the greatest ever Chevy big block parts to approximate an L88. That engine is badass...
The L88 was a very rare engine, as far as being factory installed in cars. I think they all came with aluminum heads. As did the LS-6, which was also very rare as factory installed. Those heads are the second design L88, which is open chamber, not like the early closed chamber heads.
Jim...the 454 LS-6 never had aluminum heads as standard or as an option. You could get aluminum heads in 1970 (before 1970 they were more widely offered) on an L-78 396 375 horse engine...that would make it an L-89. Factory installed aluminum heads are super rare. The aluminum heads you do find floating around were probably bought over the counter by hot rodders.
Well now I have 4 BBC 396 , 427 , 440 , 454 and I still haven't got to drive the dirt track modified .
Mmmm…… I am thinking you could crate it up real nice and send to me out west . You should be thinking about Christmas presents and I could help buy them for you
I was talking with a guy who is into classic Chevelles and he said Chevrolet shipped engines to Yenko and they installed Isky cams in all Yenko cars .Don't know if this is true are not should be a Hamber who can shed some light of this .
Those heads were ported by Don's Porting Service, a really good old school head porting shop in Albany, NY. Lots of us dirt track guys used his stuff back in the day. You've got quite a fine engine there for your modified. I'd have your engine guy check it out and freshen it up, and run it!
The guys at our local track would punch the 427 blocks .125 and run them until the popped! Most were lucky to make 4 weekly shows before they blew up. The guys ruined a lot of BBC at our local track. One of the local machine shops told everyone you had to punch them that far to make them run hard, he hogged out a lot of them. That was the same guy that told the Mopar guys you had to turn the 426 Hemi motors 10,000 rpm to make any power. I can't understand why so many local guys let him screw up their motors. Gene
