My 48 was Porsche Indiana red when I painted it in 1982.

Here it is with my then 3 year old daughter just after we got to the KOA in Ogden for the 82 Chevy Gmc Trucking Nationals.

I pulled my second bone head thing painting that truck and didn't clear coat it.

  7. Red is the color if you're after a eye-grabbing, look-at-me color that nearly anyone can tolerate (that's where the 'resale red' comes in). I'm with @theHIGHLANDER on maroon, for that matter nearly any of the older 'vintage' early-'50s back colors as they just don't have much 'life' to them. The first car I had professionally repainted was bright red (a '58 Ford Ranch Wagon, although I did do the roof in a dark red for some contrast) but that thing attracted LEOs like moths to a flame so that was the end of my love for red.

The irony is both my '47 and '60 came to me painted red, but that had more to do with the rest of the car as well as avoiding cars that had once-popular 'trendy' paint jobs like pastels and graphics, so red was definitely the lesser of those evils. It's tough to make any car look bad with red, not something you can say with other colors on some cars, so IMO that's the main reason for it's continuing popularity.

But there's no doubt that the right color can make a car stand out, and it doesn't have to be red with the right choice.

The only red I liked as a kid was candy apple. Now. Not so much.

I'm in that camp of not preferring red hot rods (Cloud Mist Grey or Royal Triton purple, anyone?), but one of my favorite hot rods is red. In fact, according to this post on the Kustomrama site, Louis Banto and Sal Macchia's 1927 Ford roadster was "painted in a bright vermillion red and white, matching the official colors of their station's products, Mobilgas and Mobiloil." Pictures from the Kustomrama page.

I love red. Been considering red for a while when the ‘57 gets a new coat one day.

The color on Brandon McCullough’s roadster is intense. It’s a completely different car depending on the light.

  12. For the hood top I grafted in louvers from a louvered side hood from the roadster kit. For the side hoods I filed down original style louvers from the 3w or sedan kit.

  15. Whats the story on the little red roadster? I know I’ve seen a pic of it before but don’t know anything about it?

  26. Yes, what's left of it. I'm hoping Steve can get it painted soon.

  27. But if he does that then he can’t say it has a Junior Conway paint job anymore?? I’d never paint it. It’s perfect! :)
